Elle just shrugged. “Mason being Mason.”

“I meant the kiss, Elle. Were you not screwing some dude named Silas all weekend? Are you fucking Mason now, too? How am I the wild one?” What has gotten into this woman lately? Silas was acting as the Ninja’s temporary band manager.

My rhetorical question was met with a list of reasons why she wasn’t the wild one. “Exhibit A would be the child sleeping in the other room. Exhibit B is that I’m not sleeping with Mason. Everything there is quite platonic. Just like a married couple.” She gave a wink.

“Yeah. I don’t understand you two.” I really didn’t. They were friends, but not in the ‘ride or die’ sense like Eli and I were. Mason and Elle were more like coworkers. Why on earth does she insist on marrying him? I dug for the gossip. “So, Silas?”

“What about him?”

“Does he know you are engaged?”

“Yes. Though, he doesn’t know to whom. He also thinks my name is Eleanor Fuller.”

“So, you lied about your name. You think he won't connect the dots, Elle? The closer we get to the election, the more your face is going to be all over the place with Mason’s. How long do you think you can hide?”

Mason’s senatorial campaign was well under way. It was definitely high-profile, considering Mason was the son of the Vice President, and our father was the Governor of Massachusetts. The two of them were like political royalty, and the press practically ate it up.

“About that.” There was a gleam in my big sister’s eyes. “I need you to take over for me with the Ninjas. The band is gaining traction and looking to head out for another road trip. You don’t have to go with them, but they need someone to keep it all together in the background.”

“So, I just arrange things from here?” I asked, intrigued.

The server life wasn’t one I wanted to live forever, it was just the most convenient. Day care was pricey, and having a flexible schedule meant more time with my kid, and less money for sitters. But my aching feet loved the sound of not waiting tables anymore. Having a baby out of wedlock made my father all but erase my existence, including my trust fund.

She nodded. “Mostly, yes. They just need someone to keep up with their real lives while they’re on tour. Connor is the only one who requires help when they aren’t touring. There may be some quick trips here and there, but we’ll figure those out as we go.”

“And do I get to bang the hot manager?” I waggled my eyebrows.

She gave me a pointed look. “I think Elijah would be a bit upset. Also, it won’t be Silas for much longer; he’s just filling in. If he was your incentive, you may want to reconsider.”

“Money was my incentive. I’ve got bills to pay.”

“Well, it’s a paying gig. Does this mean you’ll help? We’ll go over what you need to do‌, and I’ll hand it over to you.”

“Yeah. Do you need to clear this with Connor or anything? Shouldn’t he be hiring his own assistant?”

She snorted. “If he knew how to do that, he wouldn’t need one.”

A week later, I was on a video call with the members of Handheld Ninja, my sister, Mish, and two other women. Wyatt sat on the floor behind me, playing with his favorite train. I figured I had about five full minutes before he started trying to get my attention.

“As you all know, I’m going back to my real life,” my sister started.

“We know,” Sergio spoke over her before she could continue. “Silas blew a fucking gasket and blew your cover.”

Elle ignored the comment, her facial expression never changing. “Now that we know what the band needs, Connor has hired my sister, Cee, to take over the virtual position. I’ve dropped her contact details into the chat, but please remember those are confidential and covered under the NDA.”

She made them sign an NDA? I gave a shy wave of my fingers to the people on the screen.

“Cee, you know Connor and Mish,” she continued, and I nodded. “I believe you’ve met Connor’s sister, Jo, right?”

Ah, yes. Connor’s sister. “I have had the pleasure.” I winked. “Nice to see you again.”

She smiled brightly back at me. “For the record, I’m not here by choice. I’m filling in for Silas, who was filling in for Kyle, and I’m out of my depth, but as the pseudo-manager of this madness, I should be the one to welcome you to the team.”

“That seems to be how Connor operates,” I added, my lips tilting in a weak grin, referencing the way he conned Elle into helping him.

“The other lovely lady is Beth. She’s going to be handling security. For now, that’s mostly being a witness, but she’s a marine and I have it on good authority that if things get out of control, you’ll be in expert hands.”

Beth and I exchanged hellos, and Elle continued. “Matteo is the bassist.” We gave each other a quick greeting. “And Tom plays guitar.”
