“Have a seat, sir, and when we know something, we will find you.”

What the hell was I going to tell her family? I tried to get my shit together, but my hands were shaking, and it felt like someone was sitting on my chest. This is probably how she felt when Eli was in the accident. Fuck, Kate. Just don’t fucking die on me.

I knew I had to call Elle. Her family needed to know what was happening, but I had so little information and it wasn’t as if any of them were even remotely close to where we were. The closest family was Wyatt, but he wasn’t even four, and her baby daddy was the last person who needed to know about this.

“Fuller?” a voice called.

I hopped up and ran toward it. “Me. What’s happening? Is she okay?”

“We’ve stabilized Ms. Fuller for the time being,” the person in scrubs said as she led me to a quiet corner. “She’s lucky you found her when you did.”

“When can I see her?” I demanded. There was no way my blood pressure was going to recover until I could see her with my own eyes.

“She needs to be evaluated by psych, but most suicide cases require seventy-two-hour stays. You won’t be able to see her until after that.” My entire body recoiled at her saying “suicide attempt.”

“But she’s gonna be okay?”

“Physically, she will recover. Her mental health is the issue we’re concerned with.”

I paced the waiting room. As much as the idea made me cringe, I needed to call her sister.

“Silas,” I said when he answered his phone.

“Is everything okay?” There was a lot of noise in the background.

“No. It isn’t. I need you to get Elle here as soon as possible.”

“How bad is it? I thought you found her?”

Was that only yesterday? “I did. But something happened this morning. I…” I couldn’t bring myself to say the words. They were stuck in my throat.

“Hang on, I need to find somewhere better to talk.”

I wiped tears from my eyes. Exhaustion hit me like a ton of bricks, and I just wanted to sleep, but I would not leave until someone else got here.

“Serge. What the hell is going on?” Silas asked. His voice was clearer.

“She needs serious help, Si. She’s not okay.” I paused to keep myself from crying. “She took a bunch of pills this morning. She’s in the hospital and stable, physically, but mentally… Fuck, man. She’s not okay. We can’t see her until she’s been evaluated or some shit, like three days, but...”

“Shit. Yeah. We will get there as soon as possible. You okay?”

Not even a little. “Better than she is.”

“That bar is dangerously low. Just hold tight, okay, man?”

Elle and Silas had to fly in from Texas and didn’t make it to the hospital until the next afternoon. On her way to the airport, she called, and I explained everything I knew up until that point.

Elle and Silas found me when they arrived at the hospital. Elle looked ready to kill people. Specifically, I thought she might kill me. “How is she?” she demanded.

“According to the reports from the doctors, physically she’s doing well. She’s told them she’s fine and it was an accident.” I puffed out a deep breath as I ran my hand through my hair. “Psych evaluated her, and they’ll keep her the seventy-two-hours but need a court order for longer. They were hoping someone could talk her into going voluntarily. The cops cleared me, but that doesn’t matter, apparently, because that person can’t be me.” I dumped all the information I had been able to gather on their feet.

Elle let out an annoyed sigh. “I’ll get more information. Just stay here.” She marched in the direction of the nurses’ station.

Silas and I sat down. “You look like shit,” he told me.

“I just keep wondering if I hadn’t given her space maybe this wouldn’t have happened. If I just insisted on sleeping next to her, in the same bed, I would’ve woken when she got up. I knew she wasn’t doing well. I just…”

He sighed. “She needs more help than you can give her. Don’t beat yourself up. You got to her, and she’s fine. She’s going to be okay.”
