That night, we watched our shows on my iPad in my bed as the bus drove through the night to the next city. When she fell asleep, I debated waking her so she could go to her own bunk, but my selfish need to have her as close as possible won out over the sane option.

I covered her with the blanket, and she curled into me. Inhaling the sweet smell of her coconut shampoo, I fell asleep with her in my arms.

Cee had a bunk, but she never used it. Every day we hung out when I wasn’t on stage, and every night we spent watching TV together until we fell asleep.

When I met her at the side of the stage, the last night she was going to be with us for a while, she sighed. “Man, I’m going to miss this shit. I miss my kid, but he isn’t there, anyway.”

We walked toward the green room together. “Will you see him when you get back?”

“Yeah. He’ll stay with me during the day, but with Mason overnight while I’m staying at Mish and Connor’s. It’s hard enough for him to bounce back and forth between Boston and D.C., and he doesn’t need to add a third location at this point.”

I remembered my promise to move her. Stopping in my tracks, I pulled her to the side of the hallway by her arm so I could look at her when I asked, “Have you been back home at all?” She blinked back tears and shook her head. “Do you remember I promised to have you moved if you need it?” I could see her trying to find the memory.

“Vaguely, I think.”

“If you don’t want to go back there, I’ll send the moving company. Hell, my house will be done soon. You can stay there until you figure out where you want to be.”

“You’re moving to Massachusetts?”

“Yeah. Down the street from Connor. It just made sense.” It was closer to you. “Am I slightly annoyed we are living somewhere it snows? Yes. But I’ll get over it.”

“You are going to freeze to death. Have you ever shoveled snow?” she laughed.

“Hell no. Don’t plan on ever doing it.” Her laughter only grew louder. It made my heart race. Fuck, I was going to miss her when she went back home.

“So, you’re just going to stay inside all winter?”

I shrugged. “Can’t you hire people for that shit?”

“Yeah, I’m just giving you shit.” She winked.

“When do you leave?”

“I’ve got a hotel tonight so I can leave first thing in the morning. I will meet back up with you in Texas next month.”

I already can’t wait to see you again. “Cool. Any chance you’ll bring my best friend, Wyatt?”

“I already told you; my kid isn’t your wing-man. Get your own ladies.” She playfully hit my arm.

I don’t want any other ladies. I just want to see you whole again.

I spent the night wide awake in my bed. I could smell her on the sheets but couldn’t sleep without her next to me.

Naturally, I spent the following day snapping at everyone in my overtired state.

“Someone is grouchy now that his girlfriend is gone,” one of the roadies commented as I slammed a bottle down on the stage floor after sound check.

“Don’t have a girlfriend, buddy,” I mumbled.

“Whatever you wanna call it.” He walked away, but Connor came over and wrapped an arm over my shoulder.

“Let’s go chat,” he said, leading me down the hall from the stage. I rolled my eyes, not ready for a lecture, but followed along. He wandered into an empty room and shut the door behind us. There was a small table and chairs, and we both took seats. “What’s the deal with you and Cee?”

“Nothing different from before. We’re friends.”

“Sure. She’s friends with you and you’re fucking gone for her,” he said. I shrugged in response, so he kept on going. “How do you see this ending, Serge? Because the last six months you’ve been less than your usual pleasant self. Then she shows up and you’re all smiles and sunshine again.”

“Shit, man, I can’t help how I feel about her. I know she doesn’t feel the same, but I can’t seem to keep my distance.” My hands scrubbed over my face. “I’m fucked. I know I’m fucked.”
