Marienne was hovering, her long dark hair falling down her back. “What do you need me to do, Veronica?”

“I need you to shock his heart, with electricity. Like a lightning bolt.”

Marienne stared at me like I was crazy. “I could kill him.”

“He’s already dead,” I cried, pointing at Iain’s prone body. “Please!”

The sorceress rubbed her hands together, the crackle and spark of her powers caressing her fingertips.

She was waiting, too long.

“Do it!” I screamed, and Marienne dropped to her knees and set her hands on Iain’s chest.

Chapter 12.

IAIN.

There was nothing but blackness. Cold. Calm. Which was nice in a strange way. I was at peace. No more fated mate who despised me for the things that had happened in the past. No more responsibilities. Stress. Or pain.

My body didn’t hurt anymore, finally, and that was good. That was very good. It was hard to think back to the time before the pain.

But I was going to miss everyone. My mom. My dad. My... Veronica.

She would be better off without me. They were all better off without me. I was only the spare son. Anselm was the heir. And my mate had never wanted me.

White light exploded inside my mind and behind my eye lids. Oh God, it was agony. Stop! Please stop! Let me go back to the place of peace. The place without pain.

Then I was dragged back into my pain-riddled body, my leg on fucking fire.

I groaned and rolled onto my side, drawing my legs up toward my chest. “Oh... God.”

“You’re alive. You’re back!” Veronica was practically on top of me, leaning over me, then pressing her body to my side and gripping me in a tight embrace. “Oh my God, I thought I’d lost you.”

Her presence settled the strange angst inside my chest, but the pain was still there, hurting deep inside me. I moaned, unable to hold it in. “What happened?”

“You died!” she yelled, whacking me in the side.

She was angry with me, again. I didn’t know why and there was an answering anger building inside me now. Even my dragon was furious.

I groaned and doors banged open around us. People came rushing in around me, touching me, prodding at my hurting body.

Leave me alone.

“Get him up on the bed,” Dad said, and I was scooped up and placed on King Damon’s bed.

The pain in my leg burned like my whole limb was on fire. “What did you put on my leg? It feels so much worse than it did before.”

The healer pushed everyone out of the way to set his hands on me. They were cold against the heat of my skin.

“I had to treat the poison, but it’s working.”

Wait, what? “What poison?”

“The infection,” the healer said in a soft voice. “Your wound turned septic. It was killing you from the inside out.”

“It did kill you! But we brought you back.” That was Veronica, shouting again. She seemed super-upset about the almost dying thing, especially given she didn’t seem to like me.

“Do you need something for the pain?” the healer asked.
