Monday night, I stood outside the Cathedral of Learning’s campus at eight twenty-five p.m., leaning against my Bentley with my arms crossed. Sierra should be relieved of classes in five minutes, and I wanted to be there when she was, so that stupid fucker ex-boyfriend of hers wouldn’t harass her.

I tapped my fingers against my bicep and clenched my jaw, impatient.

After I had brought Sierra home the other night, I couldn’t stop thinking about what she had told me, about how her ex had made her feel from a single one-sided conversation. I didn’t know anything about the kid, except that he had hurt her. But that was enough.

My phone buzzed, and Leo’s name flashed across the screen.

Leo: Are you sure?

Leo: I can pick up Sierra, Mr. Patton.

Instead of responding, I shoved the phone into my pocket and gritted my teeth. I had rescheduled all my meetings before class tonight so I could be here for her. Leo wasn’t going to pick her up from campus anymore.

I would.

Two minutes after eight thirty, students began pouring out of the main door. I drew my tongue across my teeth and scanned the crowd for Sierra. And when the herd of students dwindled down to only a few, I rechecked Leo’s text to make sure I was in the right place.

“God, he’s so annoying,” a young woman growled, tugging Sierra out of the building.

“I don’t know why he’s suddenly so interested,” Sierra hummed.

“Because he’s jealous,” the other woman said. “Of you being with anyone else.”

“Yeah, but—” Sierra lifted her gaze and stopped mid-sentence when she spotted me. Her cheeks turned bright red, and she turned toward her friend. “I have to go to, um, another class. I’ll see you tonight.”

The friend gazed at me, then turned to Sierra and smirked. They exchanged some quiet words, which only made Sierra giggle nervously. When someone stepped out of the door, following them, they both tensed. Then, Sierra walked away.

I fixed my gaze on the man behind Sierra’s friend and narrowed my eyes, watching her walk away so he didn’t follow her. If my assumptions were correct, that fucker was the boy bothering Sierra. But I couldn’t see him in the cover of darkness.

“Professor Patton?” she said, cheeks flushing red. “What’re you doing here?”

“I’m here to take you to class.” Where I’m going to shove my cock so deep inside you that you’ll forget all about this insignificant scumbag lingering at the doorway, just waiting to follow you home.

I gazed past her at the guy near the door. “Who’s that?”

“Don’t worry about him,” Sierra said quickly, tugging on my arm.

“Is that your ex?” I asked, not budging.

“Professor,” she started.

I grabbed her chin and lifted it so she looked me in the eye. “Outside of the classroom, you will address me as Steven or Sir—do you understand?”

With wide eyes, she inhaled sharply.

“Do. You. Understand?” I asked. “Don’t make me repeat it again, Sierra.”

“Yes, Sir,” she whispered.

My thumb found her bottom lip, and I dipped it into her mouth so that asshole would know that she was mine. That if he wanted to say anything to her, then he’d have to say it to me too. That he’d never attempt to hurt her again.

“Good girl,” I praised. “Now, is that man glaring at us your ex?”

“Yes.”

“That wasn’t so hard, was it, love?” I asked.
