Almost.

“I love you,” I said shakily. “I am so, so sorry I screwed up like that.” I trailed my fingertips down his cheek. “I am so—”

“I know,” he murmured. “And I love you, too.” Then he claimed my mouth, and…

Oh.Hell.

This wasn’t the first time we’d kissed since he’d walked into my office the other day, but it was the first time we’d kissed like this in… Hell, inyears. This was “We’re getting serious, aren’t we?” kissing. It was “I love you” the first time all over again. It was “the key you gave me to your place just became my house key.”

It was “there’s no one in the world for me but you.”

When we finally came up for air, we were still so close our breath mingled between our lips.

He traced my cheekbone with his thumb. “I missed this.”

“Me too. Every damn day.” I brushed my lips across his. “We should talk about—”

He kissed me again. “No. Shut up.”

I blinked. “Huh?”

Owen caressed my face. “We have all the time in the world to talk. And we will.” He lifted his chin for another quick kiss. “But first, we’re going to get fucking naked and piss off my downstairs neighbors.”

The laugh that rushed out of me felt damn good. “I… Okay. Yeah. That sounds…” I nodded. “I’m in.”

“Figured you would be.”

“Counterpoint, though?”

He drew back enough to meet my gaze, his expression puzzled.

“Maybe the first thing we should do is actually go back to the condo?” I circled my finger in the air. “Because the neighbors won’t hear us from here.”

He blinked, glancing around as if he’d forgotten where we were. Then he chuckled and shrugged, a wicked glint in those beautiful eyes. “You don’t want to bang me over your desk?”

“I mean, I do.” I slid a hand up his back. “But your bed is so much more comfortable.”

“Mmm, you make a good point.” He claimed another kiss. One that made me seriously consider doing this over my desk after all, but then he nudged me back a step and growled, “Let’s get out of here.”

“Good idea.”

The drivefrom the clinic to Owen’s condo was surprisingly quick, given how badly I needed us to get there. I fully expected some catastrophe like a major accident or—like that one time last summer—a dragon deciding to take a nap in the middle of a major thoroughfare. That didn’t happen often, but there wasn’t a whole lot anyone could do except wait for the thing to wake up and move. And dragons weren’t exactly prone to fifteen-minute power naps; traffic could be a nightmare for literaldays.

No dragons were blocking any roads tonight, and before I knew it, we were parking below Owen’s condo. As we got out of our respective cars, we exchanged grins, and we both jogged toward the elevator.

As soon as the doors had closed, Owen hauled me into a deep kiss.

“We only have three floors,” I murmured against his lips.

“I know. But I couldn’t—”

Abruptly, the doors were opening again. I didn’t even think the elevator had started moving yet. What the hell?

But theywereopen, so we jumped apart, but not before Mrs. Clarke, the elderly lady who lived on the fifth floor, stepped in. Owen was blushing bright as the sun. I probably was too, judging by the heat in my cheeks. Mrs. Clarke just smiled at us and pressed the button for her floor.

Mercifully, it didn’t take long to get to Owen’s floor, but as we stepped out, Mrs. Clarke called after us, “Have fun, boys!”

Owen stumbled. I clipped my shoulder on the wall. We both glanced back just in time to catch her snarky grin and cheeky little wave just before the doors closed.
