Owen swallowed. Then the smile turned to a playful grin. “You wanna get hitched?”

The laugh that burst out of me got my breath moving again. “Of course I do! I just… I can’t believe you do, after—”

He kissed me softly. “You’ve more than made up for the past. I want us to make a future.”

My throat tightened and my eyes stung. “You are…” I wrapped my arms around him. “You’re amazing, you know that?”

“Oh, I know,” he said in a cocky tone. “I heard the way you came last night.”

I laughed again, holding him tighter. “God, I love you.”

“I love you, too.” He loosened his embrace. “I’m just, uh… I’m not sure what to do with…” He held up the ring again.

I glanced down at the bandages. “I do have two hands.” I gestured with the right one. “We could always move it to my left when we get married.”

We both froze, eyes locked.

When we get married.

Oh. Wow. We were doing this.

The smile on his lips melted me, and I pulled him back in, this time for a long, gentle kiss. I’d debated more than once proposing to him, but I hadn’t felt right asking him to make that commitment. It always seemed like I needed to do a little more to make up for the past before I had any business suggesting we make this permanent.

But tonight… Owen had asked.

Despite everything, Owen wanted us to be forever.

No, I didn’t need to grovel going forward. If ever I had any doubt that Owen had forgiven me, that he trusted me, that he loved me—those doubts scattered.

I didn’t have to fall all over myself to show him how sorry I was anymore.

But I vowed then and there to spend the rest of my life showing him how much I loved him.

Because there was no one in the world for me but Owen.
