I was vaguelyaware that time was ticking away and the hours were passing me by, but when Audrey stood in the doorway again, looking at me a little anxiously, I didn't realize how late it had gotten.

"Have you eaten?"

The answer seemed obvious, for there were no plates piled on the table, no cutlery. Not to mention a glass.

Audrey clapped her hands determinedly. "Okay. Time to call it a day. We're going to dinner."

Now that she mentioned the word for the second time, I felt the emptiness in my stomach, and shortly after that I heard a low growl that proved her right about her plans.

"Turn off the PC. We're leaving right now," she continued without further ado, adopting a commanding tone that usually only I used. At the moment, I couldn't even blame her. The last time I had worked for hours without eating was months ago. At my old job. When Audrey and I hadn't even started dating.

"And what do you have in mind?" I asked, already following her instructions.

She shrugged. "If you have a suggestion, go ahead. But let's talk about it on the way out."

Since we had the opening during the week, we had a little buffer until the first official weekend. That would end tomorrow night, but that didn't mean we all had to work night shifts to make sure everything ran smoothly.

From the beginning, we had organized the event in a way that allowed us all to approach it relatively calmly. There was staff, and no one had to do all the work alone. Especially not once the club was up and running and everything was settled.

"So, dinner?" Audrey interrupted my train of thought as we walked through the main room.

"My favorite would be if you were on the menu." I grinned suggestively and looked down at her.

"How about you eat something real first so you can get through everything else?"

"Are you doubting my steadfastness right now?"

"No. I only care about you and your well-being. You haven't eaten since this morning, and if you're physically exhausted now..."

"So we'll get something to eat at a drive-through."

She looked at me for a long time before finally nodding. Audrey rolled her eyes, but it was worth it if I got everything I wanted in a short time.

When I came backinto the kitchen, drying my hands on a cloth, Audrey was sitting on the counter. Sometime in the last five minutes, she had taken off her shoes and pants and swapped her top for a silk kimono that was only loosely tied around her waist, making it a seductive temptation in itself, seamlessly following up on what I had said to her earlier.

She watched my every move intently as I put the towel aside, folded my arms, and walked toward her, pausing a few inches in front of her so our bodies were not yet touching.

I wanted nothing more than let my eyes roam over her curves, but for the moment it was her gaze that held me captive.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" I asked. She had something to say, but either she was waiting for something or she didn't dare.

Slowly she looked down, and I followed her gaze to an inconspicuous black box between her thighs that I probably wouldn't have noticed if she hadn't pointed it out.

I raised an eyebrow. "What's that?"

"What do you think it is?"

I put both hands on the countertop, on either side of her body. "Don't play games, Audrey."

"It's a gift for you."

"But it's not my birthday."

"And is that absolutely necessary when I give you a present?"

"Tell me what it is."
