“Yes, she really is a breath of fresh air. So pretty and smart. I think you have made a great choice and it is clear that you both love each other. She also seems like a good caregiver for Maisey,” Stanley explains.
“We also want you to know that we do not judge you for getting with a nanny. It happens all the time,” Lila finally speaks.
I glare at her but then my brow relaxes. They are all supportive of Cam and I. It feels like a weight has been lifted from my chest but at the same time a new pressure is building.
Everyone loves Cam.
How will they react when things between us end?
“I appreciate all of your kind words,” is all that I can bear to say. “Is there anything else you’d like to discuss?”
The three of them nod and then we start talking about everything work related. There is a new offer on the table and it is cheaper than the one we got months ago.
We work through what to do before we disband.
The rest of the work day flies by and I make it home as Cam is making dinner.
“Daddy!” Maisey calls out as she runs into my arms.
“Darling, how are you?”
“I’m good, Cam took me to the zoo.”
“Tell me all about it,” I say, ignoring Cam’s gaze on the side of my head as I take a seat across from my daughter.
Maisey beams at me, “We saw monkeys and lions. The lions were the best. Cam took pictures. Show him, Cam!”
Cam approaches me and I freeze up as she sets a hand on my shoulder. The place she touches burns but I ignore the feeling. Cam shows me her phone and I see a picture of Maisey roaring along with the lions. It is a great picture.
“Wow Maisey, that is so cool,” I say, shrugging Cam’s hand off my shoulder.
“Yeah, it was awesome.”
Maisey goes into more details about their trip to the zoo before Cam clears her throat.
“Dinner is ready.”
Cam puts a bowl of beef stew in front of Maisey and I before grabbing a bowl for herself. I had not had beef stew since Piedmont but it reminds me of home in a good way.
I dig in as a low moan escapes my throat and how tender the beef is and how soft the carrots and potatoes are.
“This is really good,” I say breathlessly, looking towards Cam.
She smiles at me and opens her mouth to respond before I look away and shove more food in my mouth.
I am supposed to be ignoring Cam but here I am complimenting her. Shaking my head, I finish dinner before making an excuse to leave.
“I must shower. It has been a long day.”
Getting up, I rush to my bedroom.
I lock the door and lean back against it. My pants tighten at the thought of Cam slaving away at making me dinner. She is such a good girl and will make someone a great wife but not me. We are not meant to be.
Hurrying out of my pants, I throw my clothes across the room as I head to my bathroom. I turn the water on hot and get under the steaming water. The water is hot but it feels good against my skin.
I picture Cam in here with me, water reflecting off of her perfect porcelain skin.
