I shake my head as we exit Cam’s small apartment bedroom and go back into the main area.

“Is anything of worth gone?” I ask, looking at the clothes on the ground and overturned furniture.

Cam flips the furniture back over and looks through everything on the ground.

“All my money is gone. I had some saved here just in case,” Cam confesses as she rubs the back of her neck.

Cam does not have to explain anything to me but I can tell she looks sheepish yet upset at the same time.

“What’s that face for?” I inquire.

Cam shrugs, “I just feel defeated. Out of all the apartments in this building, why was mine broken into? They stole the most random things too. My money, obviously, but some of my clothes are missing too but my tv, though it is small, is still here.”

I look and she is right. Her television is still here but the screen is broken, like someone took a baseball bat to it.

“That is true,” I responded. “We should see if any other apartments were broken into or if anyone saw anything.”

Cam nods and I watch as her ponytail swishes, hitting me with her fresh vanilla scent, she must be using the lotion I gave her.

We walk to the small lobby of the apartment building and find the property manager,

“Hi there, my name is Camdyn Schriefer and I live on the twentieth floor. I have not been to my apartment since last Sunday but when I got here today it looks like someone ransacked the place. Has anyone else reported any break ins?”

The male looks at Cam and shakes his head, “That’s impossible. I’m here every day and no one gets in the apartment building without a key or without going through me.”

I don’t like how this guy is talking to Cam but I need to let her handle it.

“Well, someone broke into my apartment, I can show you,” Cam says.

The guy, whose name tag read Ronnie, follows us up to her apartment.

The door is still ajar as the lock was broken and Ronnie’s eyes widened at the sight of the apartment.

Ronnie looks around and his face grimaces, “I’m sorry but I have no idea how this could have happened.”

That is not acceptable. I open my mouth but Cam beats me to it.

“Well, someone who either lives here did this or someone you let in did this.”

Ronnie swallows, “Ma’am I’m not sure what you are insinuating but the people who live here aren’t criminals but I will send out a mass email asking for more information.”

With that Ronnie scurries off. He was no help.

“I think you should call the police and file a police report. That guy was no help.”

“Are you sure? I don’t want to cause any problems.”

Of course Cam does not want to make a big deal out of this but this is a big deal. Someone was able to get into her apartment and steal things and also destroy all her belongings she left here.

“Cam, what if the person does this to someone else's apartment? You have to report it.”

Cam’s eyes widen before she nods, “You’re right.”

We call the police and wait in the lobby for an officer to show up. The silence between us is deafening. Ronnie keeps glancing over at us and Cam is quiet. She must have been so scared when she arrived here earlier. I am so glad I trusted my gut and followed her here. Dropping Maisey off at our emergency sitter was a bit difficult but that’s just the lady who lives a few floors below the penthouse. She is an older lady with cats who loves children but never had any of her own. She is willing to watch Maisey but only for a couple hours at a time.

I hear a sniffle to my right and glance at Cam.

“What’s wrong Cam?” I ask throwing my arm around her.
