“How does Bryce feel about that?”

She waves her hand. “Doesn’t care. He knows I’m crazy about him. He’ll be here tomorrow, by the way. We should all hang out.”

“Absolutely.” I love being around the two of them because they’re so bubbly and outgoing. Even though I have to lie down for a while afterward. They’re both soon. All the time. “I’m so glad to see you. It’s been a crazy day. God, it’s only been a day since Papa’s heart attack.”

“Yeah, tell me everything.”

Anh listens as I talk about my father. That’s one of her best qualities, her ability to truly listen.

I was hesitant when I first met her. She was so beautiful and didn’t hesitate to showcase her looks, whereas I was a twenty-four-year-old nerd intern. Still, she took me into her circle of friends, all models, and we’d had some amazing times together at places around the globe. We’ve ridden elephants, camels, and mechanical bulls. Swum in waterfalls, and danced until dawn in Spain.

“I’m so glad Adrian’s doing better. How terrifying.” She presses a hand to her chest. “And I saw your photo at the hospital with a certain driver. Or am I still prohibited from talking about him?”

A groan slips out of my mouth. There’s no escaping the Max conversation. Not with my best friend. “Oh, get this. Guess where I’m staying tonight?”

When I tell her, Anh’s eyes open wide and her mouth forms a perfect scarletO. “In the same bed?” she whispers.

“No,” I practically shout.

She raises her eyebrows and smirks, as if to sayyeah, right.

“I’m serious.”

“I am too. The way he was looking at you in that photo.” She pretends to fan herself.

“Come on. I saw the photo and I looked sweaty.”

“Dewy.”

We laugh. “Honest. There’s nothing going on.”

“Look me in the eye and tell me you’re not attracted to him.” She fixes an unwavering gaze on me.

“I’m not . . .” My voice trails off and I dissolve into laughter.

She’s not laughing.

“What?” I ask, taking a pull from my beer.

Anh shakes her head, still not convinced. “Babycakes, you can deny it all you want but I know that look when I see it.”

She takes a sip of her fancy beer. One thing about Anh hasn’t changed over the years: she can see right through my bullshit. Right now she’s staring at me with a laser-like focus. It’s time to change the subject.

“Who do you think will win the race?”

She purses her lips, aware of what I’m trying to do. “He didn’t ever sleep with any grid girls, you know. In case you were wondering.”

“Who?”

“You know exactly who.”

I lean in closer. “He did sleep with a bunch of other women.”

“Not recently, and only after you broke up with him. One model told me he said your name in his sleep one night.” Anh is also up on all the Formula World gossip. If she says Max didn’t sleep with anyone recently, it must be true.

“Come on, that’s ridiculous.”

“It’s true.”
