“He is right about that,” King calmly remarked, and I could swear that there was a hint of approval in his voice.

Finally! Somebody saw my vision.

Jack still didn’t appear inclined to agree, though.

“While all of that may be true, now someone has to tell the Don that one of his warehouses burned down. And that we were the ones who did it.”

King rubbed at his temple as he let out a sigh. “I’ll do it.”

“I’m coming with you,” Jack told him before he turned to face me again. “Youstay here.”

Although I felt slightly disgruntled at being spoken to like a toddler and put in time-out, I knew that when Jack got in one of his moods, it was better to just let it run its course. With both of them gone, however, I started to feel restless, so I decided to roam aimlessly around the house in search of something to do. As luck would have it, I found a fantastic distraction almost immediately.

Blondie was in the living room reading something on the couch, with her legs propped over a handrest. I flopped down onto the other end of the couch, and her narrowed eyes peeked over the cover of her book to look at me.

“What’s up with you?”

“What do you mean?” I asked, and she lowered the book down to her chest.

“You’re sulking.”

“I’m not sulking— “ was my knee-jerk response. “I just had a… tiny disagreement with the guys, that’s all.”

Once again, the view of her face was obstructed as she turned back to reading her book.

“Oh, really? What did you do?”

“I…” I started to say, suppressing a grimace. “… I may have set something on fire that I shouldn’t have.”

The sound of Blondie’s laughter was genuine and heartfelt — something I hadn’t heard from her since she moved here — and it brought a small smile to my face, too.

She really should laugh more often.

“So you’re an arsonist, too.” Blondie’s giggles started to subside as she continued to shake her head in amusement. “That really shouldn’t surprise me.”

I frowned, not liking the sound of that.

I liked having people be surprised by me.

“You’re terrible at making someone feel better, you know,” I told her, and she let out a little huff.

“I’m not your fucking mother. I don’t know what you want me to say.”

“If we’re going by that, I also have no idea what you should say.”

This managed to pull another small smile from her. “Hm, me neither.”

It was at that moment that I heard my phone started to ring. I immediately fished it out of my pocket and I saw King’s name flashing across the screen.

“So, what’s the damage?” I asked without beating around the bush.

“The good news is that while the Don isn’t too happy about what happened, he’s more irritated at having his warehouse under attack than about what you did. We’re going to stop by to check the damages now.”

“Do you need me to come with you?”

“No. it’s fine. Jack and I got it covered.”

I could barely hear King’s voice over the incessant noises in the background, but I managed to catch a“We’ll see you tomorrow,”before the line went silent.
