Surprisingly, Blondie wasn’t a fan of the idea.

“Oh, come on. You’re seriously done already? And here I thought that you’d handle your alcohol better.”

“Don’t peer pressure me into drinking, Blondie,” I snarked back at her. “If you’re looking to get drunk, I can get you something stronger.”

“No, I don’t want to get drunk.” She blew out a breath., sounding like it should have been obvious. “I just want to drinkwithsomeone.”

Oh.

She probably just felt lonely. To be fair, who wouldn’t be in her situation?

The only ones she could talk to were me, King, and Jack. And it appeared that she had made a point of not talking to King, and Jack had never been that much of a conservationist.

I let out a heavy sigh but nodded. “Ok. Let’s drink, then.”

She let out a happy little sound, and we resumed watching TV — set on some animal kingdom documentary or some other shit like that, with English narration over it. As time went by, Blondie gradually started to inch closer and closer to me until I could feel the heat of her body warming my side.

I only noticed it once she propped her legs on the table next to mine, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw her head turn toward me. “Do you miss them?”

“Who?” I asked absentmindedly.

Those pelicans sure were funny-looking things. Why would a bird ever need a beak so huge? Pigeons had normal beaks, and so did parrots — so what made pelicans so fucking special.

“King and Jack.”

It took me a moment to remember what she was talking about.

Ah yes…

“They’ve been gone for like two hours,” I said, frowning at the TV.

“But do you miss them?” Blondie still insisted, and I took a few seconds to actually think about it.

“I guess that I’m used to always being around them, yes.”

She let out a thoughtful hum, the light from the TV making shadows dance across her face. “Based on what I know about codependency, I think that this falls under it.”

My whole body started to shake as I laughed, and I tried my best not to spill the beer on the couch. Jack would kill me if I did that, and he was already cross enough with me.

“Did you only ask me that in order to make fun of me?” I asked, and Blondie also let out a little giggle.

“No. It’s just— “ She paused for a moment to shake her head. “It’s just that codependency is always portrayed as something bad, but personally, I would love to have something like that. Toneed someone constantly by my side — to not even be able to breathe without them — and for it to be reciprocated, of course.”

It took a few moments for what she said to sink in.

“I… I don’t think that’s healthy.”

“I didn’t say that it was.” I could feel her shoulder shrugging against mine. “But that still doesn’t make the idea of it any less appealing.”

That was certainly an interesting point of view, but I had to admit that I also kind of got it.

Unconditional love.

Who wouldn’t want something like that?

I almost jumped up in surprise when I felt gentle fingers running through my hair. The tension in my muscles instantly melted away as I relaxed into the comforting touch.

This felt very nice…
