“But you are the oldest though, aren’t you? You definitely give off that vibe.”

I hummed in affirmative.

“You also don’t talk very much, do you? Were you taught that or is it just your nature?” the girl remarked and I huffed out a breath.

“Aren’t you a good little psychiatrist?”

She kicked me gently in the shin. “I’m not a psychiatrist…” she complained, giggling. “But I’ve been told that I’m a very good fortune teller.”

I gave a small chuckle upon hearing her admission. “You’re just pulling my leg now.”

“I’m not!” She exclaimed, offended. “You don’t believe me?”

“Too bad we don’t have any tarot cards here to test that,” I told her, amused, but she was quick to reassure me.

“That’s fine! I’m a palm reader, too.”

She crossed her legs beneath her and turned sideways to face me. “Come on, give me your palm!”

Deciding to humor her, I offered her my hand and she pulled it into her lap, palm up.

“So what do you see?” I asked, and she immediately shushed me.

“Shh! Don’t interrupt me! I’m concentrating.”

Her brow furrowed as she thoroughly examined my palm. After some time, she spoke. “See this line here?” She traced a graceful finger down the middle of my palm. “That’s your life line. It’s long, so that means that you’re going to live a very long life.”

“Palm reading certainly sounds very complicated,” I remarked, and she shushed me again, giggling.

The girl’s head tilted to the side, her eyes narrowing.

“And now, would you look at this!” she declared, sounding mischievous. “You also have a very prominent heart line. This indicates that you’ll have agreatlove. You’ll meet them early in your life if you haven’t already and spend the rest of your years with them, happy and in love.” A fingertip brushed over my palm.

And with that, she proved to me what I had already known.

Palm readings were complete bogus.

There was no great love for me. For any of us, really.

All Ace knew was one-night stands and the only relationship King had ever been in lasted for two weeks, about three years ago.

I wondered if they ever felt like they were missing someone.

When I didn’t show any reaction to her prediction about love, the girl led on.

“Your mind line is also very strong and very deep. That means that you’re a cautious and analytical person, tending to think hard and look both ways before you leap.”

Her expression turned serious as she continued to look down at my hand. “But there is also grief and sorrow mixed in there, as well.”

Half of her face was bathed in warm light coming from the lamp, creating a beautiful contrast. It wouldn’t be difficult for someone to believe her claims if they spent too much time staring at her pretty face — focused and engrossed in whatever she might be seeing in my hand, lost in deep thought.

“It’s almost as if you carry a great guilt about something.”

I instinctively jerked my hand away as if it had been scorched. I stood up, taking a moment to clear my throat and gather my thoughts.

“It’s late. I should go to bed.”

The girl didn’t try to stop me from leaving this time around.
