I was confused for a moment before I remembered. “He doesn’t have any children, does he?”

Jack shook his head in agreement. “No, he doesn’t. That means that when he dies, his title will be up for grabs. Then it will really be a bloodbath.”

“Will you guys join the fight too?” I asked, chuckling under my breath as I imagined it. “Do you want to become the next Don… or Dons, in your case?”

It wouldn’t even be that much of a stretch.

They had already made a name for themselves. Of course, if you wanted to become the Don, you also had to come from the right family, but I was sure that they could find some way around that.

“Maybe. Maybe not,” Jack said in response, not looking particularly interested in the subject anymore.

That wasn’t a real answer, but I decided not to push it.

I was finished stitching him up anyway, so I tied off the suture at the end and I grabbed a towel, doing a quick work of wiping the leftover blood off his skin. When there weren’t any traces of red left, I put my hand over his and smiled up at him.

“There, all clean now.”

Jack looked down at me and I could have sworn that there was a hint of fondness in his eyes. I sincerely hoped that I wasn’t being delusional and was just imagining it. Before I even became aware of what I was doing, I found myself inching closer untilour lips softly brushed against each other and met softly in a feather-light kiss.

I pulled away from him with a start.

“What was that?” I faltered in surprise.

Jack’s startled expression mirrored my own as he stared back at me. “Why are you asking me? You’re the one who kissed me.”

I did, didn’t I?

God, what was I thinking?

Was I so touch-starved that I’d go around kissing strange men I knew next to nothing about?

Feeling a mixture of confusion and disbelief towards my own behavior, I cleared my throat and gingerly rose from my position.. “I should go.”

But just as I was about to walk away, Jack unexpectedly caught hold of my hand.

“Wait! What do you mean go? You still hadn’t told me why you kissed me.”

I just offered him a helpless shrug. “I honestly dunno.”

“You don’t know?” Jack repeated, sounding skeptical. He still hadn’t let go of my hand.

“No, I don’t!” I let out an exasperated breath. “Not everything can or has to be explained, Jack.”

“It does if it has something to do with me. So here I am asking, again — where did that come from?”

Beginning to feel more and more irritated by his persistent questions, I directed my eyes to the white wall behind him, hoping to evade his searching gaze.

“I guess I was worried a little about you. I don’t know.”

“Is that all?” he asked and I looked back at him, biting down on my lip hard as I hummed in agreement.

Jack was still holding my hand as he took another step closer. “Because you are kind of looking at me like you want to kiss me again.”

“Do I?” I asked, my eyes incapable of tearing away from his mouth. The kiss from earlier was still lingering on my lips, making them tingle.

Taking another step forward, he closed the remaining distance between us. I sucked in a small gasp as his lips pressed against mine again, light but there.

Testing. Hesitant… like he wasn’t sure if he was allowed to kiss me or not.
