I had the most peculiar feeling that this wasn’t going to be just a one-time thing, after all.

“Idon’t want anything to do with her… Just keep her away from me… Why does she have to stay here?”I mimicked the low tones of Jack’s voice.“This girl will bring us nothing but trouble…”I led on and Jack looked at me, unimpressed.

“After all of that, you sleep with her? Are you serious?” I exclaimed, but it was hard to maintain the disappointed act when I saw just how embarrassed Jack started to look.

“It isn’t like that.”

“Oh, really?” I stared at him, pretending to be surprised. “What is it like, then?”

Before he could answer, King coughed into his fist. “Lay off him, Ace,” he admonished me, but I could hear him straining not to laugh out loud.

“How do you even know about it, anyway?” Jack asked, sullen.

“The walls are thin,” I deadpanned, and even King chuckled at that. Jack became even redder, if possible.

“Change of subject, please,” he mumbled into his coffee.

King cleared his throat again, putting him out of his misery.

Spoilsport.

“Are you feeling better today?” He gestured toward Jack’s side, where his shirt was noticeably bulging out.

Jack placed his palm over the spot. “It’s nothing. Just a graze.”

Ah, Jack, Jack… Why did he always have to act like he was invincible? Like there was nothing that could ever possibly hurt him. That habit of his was going to get him killed one day, mark my words.

A few minutes later, we finished our coffees and went back to work.

Following that conversation, I pushed Jack’s unexpected affair with Blondie at the back of my mind.

It was none of my business, and it appeared to be a one-off thing, anyhow.

There wasn’t another late-night rendezvous. No one was giggling or making cow eyes at each other over the dining room table — no matter how funny the mental image of Jack acting like that was. If I hadn’t heard what I did that night, there would be no possible way to tell that anything had ever happened between those two.

There was also the possibility that they learned how to be more discreet, of course.

While I was all for having loud sex in the middle of the night, it was also polite to be mindful of other people who might be sleeping at the moment.

Other than that little aberration in our everyday schedule, things went on like usual.

Occasionally, we’d receive a summons from the Don to clean up some mess or another, but as of late, there had been a noticeable decrease in them, leading me to spend the majority of my time at home.

Living with King and Jack had become a routine — I could barely recall the times when we hadn’t been joined at the hip, really — and now, even with the recent addition of Blondie, it felt like very little had actually changed.

It was surprising how seamlessly she had integrated into our group, and I also had to admit that it was nice having her around the house.

Sometimes.

Other times, she could be a complete pain in my ass.

Like she was right now.

“Ludovica…” I warned her as she snatched the remote out of my hands and promptly switched the TV to a different channel.
