“What are we watching?”

“Nothing for now,” King responded, and I scooted over to make room for Ace to sit.

That put me shoulder-to-shoulder with King, but I didn’t mind the closeness, even if I found it slightly distracting.

It surprised me how much I had grown accustomed to physical touch lately.

It was a stark contrast from how it used to be before I arrived here. I struggled to recall the last time I had shared such a small, innocent contact with someone. The only things that turned up were the harsh touch of rough hands, the chilling traces of cold steel, and the lingering ache of constant pain.

Francesco liked his obedient soldiers to be well-trained.

“Oh, we should watch this!” Ace suddenly announced.

“Watch what?”

I almost jumped a foot in the air when Jack’s voice emerged out of nowhere, over my head. I glanced back at the screen, the start of what looked like to be a horror movie beginning to play.

“No,” King immediately opposed the idea.

“All for, show their hands!!” Ace smirked, and he and I raised ours right away.

Jack plopped down into the armchair next to us and just said, “Pick whatever you want. I don’t care.”

“Sorry, King,” Ace told him, sounding more pleased than sorry. “It’s two against one.”

King huffed, but I could feel him sinking deeper into the couch.

“What do you have against horror movies, anyway?” I laughed, but he just sighed.

“Nothing,” King answered, somewhat gruffly.

“He’s scared of them,” Ace chipped in, before shoving a handful of popcorn into his mouth.

“I’m not scared of them.” King let out a scoff. “I just think that it’s stupid for people to make themselves scared on purpose.”

Ace leaned in to whisper in my ear. “So very scared.”

I giggled, then cleared my throat when King’s narrowed eyes cut to us both.

I nudged him with my shoulder, smiling. “Don’t worry. If you start being scared I’ll let you hold my hand.”

He huffed again, but I could see a small smile hiding at the corner of his mouth.

Jack got up from his seat to turn off the lights, and then we all settled in to watch the movie. Unfortunately, it soon turned out to be the same boring plot, identical to the thousands before it.

The family moved into a new house, only to discover it was haunted by a mysterious apparition, and then they continued to make one stupid decision after the other. The plot of the moviedidn’t manage to hold my attention for long and my mind began to wander.

I wondered what Damiano was doing at the moment.

But thinking about Damiano made me remember Francesco, and I usually avoided thinking about him unless I really had to.

Damiano must think I was dead, right?

Before I left for my mission, he had told me straight to my face that I was stupid for accepting the mission. After that, he hugged me tightly and wished me luck.

I had to suppress an incredulous giggle from making itself known.

Neither of us correctly predicted the way I’d end up.
