My sweet and lovely boys.

How did I ever dare to have any doubts about them?

Jack was pacing up and down the living room, his appearance reminiscent of a stern professor lecturing his unruly students. “We first need to sort out the most important thing — we have to get you a fake passport.”

“I can take care of it,” Ace offered from where he was sitting next to King on the couch.

I was mostly just watching them from the sidelines, engrossed in observing the three of them create a plan of how to get me over the border. It was a compelling sight — the way they worked together, bouncing ideas back and forth, operating like a well-oiled machine.

I was slightly ashamed to admit it, but I’d been afraid that they were going to change their minds about this. As more days passed by, however, it appeared that they were going to stick to their promise.

“We won’t be able to help you, just so you know. The moment you step foot out of this house you’re on your own,” Ace told me.

I tapped my chin. “You don’t have to worry about that. I have a friend who is very good at discretely getting people out of the country.”

Damiano probably wouldn’t mind helping out an old friend.

God, I could just imagine his face when he saw that I was still alive.

He was going tofreak.

“Great!” King clasped his hands together. “That’s one matter settled, then. Let’s see what we’re going to do about…” He started talking about what would happen when I passed the border, but I wasn’t too worried about that.

Really, they were blowing things out of proportion a bit.

It wasn’t like I was new to all of this.

I knew how to stay hidden from prying eyes, and if I encountered any trouble, I’d been trained by the best on how to handle it. But there still remained one other important thing to discuss, though.

“But what about you guys?” I asked, and they went silent, looking at me in surprise. It seemed like they had forgotten that I was even in the room with them.

Well… at least they were very passionate about my safety.

“What are you going to tell your boss?” I clarified when they just continued to look at me puzzled.

King’s brow creased in confusion. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, what reason are you going to give the Don about why you decided to discard me now? Did you guys just get bored with me or something?”

They just continued to stare at me with a look of puzzlement on their faces.

“What?” I asked, almost self-consciously.

It wasn’t that weird of a question to ask.

“Sorry. It’s just that the Don…” Ace spoke to me slowly, as if he was talking to a toddler. “… he doesn’t know that you’re alive. You know that, right?”

“What?” I blinked at them.

What.

Ace’s words sunk in a moment later.

“What? Why didn’t anyone tell me!?” I exclaimed, my tone stuck between incredulity and confusion.
