I had been mulling over various options until the most obvious one had unexpectedly slipped out of my mouth. Well… it was too late to take it back now.

Ace’s eyes snapped away from the girl to give me an incredulous stare.

“What?” he asked. When he saw what I was getting at, he frowned. “Why? You’ve never done that before.”

Because I like her eyes.

Their blue was so deep that I may as well have been looking at a sapphire. However, I couldn’t say that, at least not if I didn’t want the guys to laugh me straight out of the dungeon.

“I just do.”

“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” The irritating voice of reason, also better known as Jack, spoke up. “She is very beautiful, sure. But she also killed two of the Don’s most skilled bodyguards and almost managed to kill the Don himself.”

So, she was competent. There was nothing wrong with that.

I shifted my gaze back to Ace, hoping to hear his thoughts on the matter.

“I say you go for it.” He grinned, unbothered. “I wouldn’t mind having some eye candy around the house.”

I didn’t think that he would have a problem with it.

Jack, on the other hand…

“What are you even going to do with her?” he asked, exasperated.

I… hadn’t planned so far ahead, to be completely honest.

All I knew was that I wanted her.

Simple as that.

“I don’t know.” I shrugged my shoulders, not really feeling that worried. “I’ll just… see how things are and go from there.”

What was the worst that could happen?

“You don’t know— alright,” Jack said, pinching the bridge of the nose. “You are starting to sound a lot like Ace.”

Ace let out a loud noise of indignation, but Jack and I both ignored it.

“I just hope that you’re aware that this isn’t going to end well.”

“Oh, shut the fuck up, Jack. Stop trying to bring him down. Don’t you see how happy he is about getting a new girlfriend?”Ace jumped to my defense, though I would have appreciated it more if he hadn’t said it quite so mockingly.

“Fuck off. It isn’t about that.” I shot him a glare. Not that Ace seemed much affected by it.

“So what? You’re just going to keep her around the house as a pretty ornament?”

I scowled at Jack, hating how he made it sound like I wanted her as some sort of object.

The way he put it was just crude.

I just… didn’t want to see the light dimming out of her eyes so soon, that was all.

“She was going to die, anyway. I doubt that the Don would have allowed her to live, so I’m just— “ I gathered my thoughts for a moment, mulling over the best way to explain it. — “I’m just doing her a favor. Keeping her alive.”

Two skeptical expressions stared back at me.

“Favor…” Ace dragged out the word. “…right. I’m sure that she’s going to see it that way.”
