“Shhh,you’ll see.”

The quick pace started to resemble running the more we walked until we were full-on sprinting. It was fortunate that he was still holding my hand; otherwise, I would have had trouble keeping up with him. Alessio then made a sudden stop and I narrowly avoided slamming into his back.

“Wait, no.” I saw him squinting into the darkness. “We should turn left,” he said before he started to usher me up a staircase.

I tried to slow down, afraid that I was going to trip and fall, but he continued to drag me behind him, not giving the stairs a second thought.

I started to feel scared.

He seemed to be in a lot of hurry.

Maybe something bad had happened.

Just as I was preparing to ask again about where we were going, we came to sudden a stop. He let go of my hand to open the door in front of us.

As soon as I stepped outside, a gust of cold wind stung my cheeks. Before my bleary eyes could adjust to sudden the brightness of the street lamps, I heard shouts of, “Happy birthday, Dahlia!”

Alessio passed by me and moved to stand with Marcello and Virgil, who were grinning wide at me. It took me a moment to notice that Marcello was holding a cupcake in his hand.

It even had a pink little candle on top!

I approached them, my cheeks hurting from how widely I was smiling. I’d completely forgotten that today was my birthday, but of course, they remembered.

“Where did you guys get the cupcake from?”

“One of the older kids bought it for us,” Virgil explained, before making a hand gesture toward it. “Come on make a wish.”

Marcello held up the cupcake and after a moment, I blew out the pretty candle.

“What did you wish for?” Alessio eagerly asked, but then Virgil smacked him on the back of his head.

“She can’t tell you that, stupid. If she does then it won’t come true.”

“No, I can’t say…” I agreed with Virgil. “But I can whisper it so that only you three will hear it. You guys don’t count.”

It wasn’t like I ever held any secrets from them. I didn’t see the need to start doing it now. I took a few steps closer, making sure to keep my voice down. “I wished that the four of us would always be together.”

I couldn’t think of anything else that I wanted more.

“Of course we’re going to be together,” Alessio scoffed. “Why wouldn’t we be?”

Marcello and Virgil were also nodding along in agreement.

I wrapped my arms around them, squeezing them tightly, inhaling their familiar scent. I had never felt safer than when I was in their arms. A few moments later, I had to reluctantly let go of them and pull back.

I grabbed the cupcake and divided it into four equal pieces, offering one to each of them. Then, I sat down on the blanket. I lay down on my back and looked up at the sky.

The stars were twinkling so prettily tonight. I could so easily imagine the little prince living up there, on one of those stars.

I turned sideways to look at my best friends again, and my heart felt like it was going to burst with happiness.

This was the best birthday ever!

I sat up once more and regarded them with a serious look. “Let’s make a pact,” I told them, and they looked at me curiously.

I held out my pinky. “Swear to me that no matter what happens, no one or anything will ever tear us apart.”

Their fingers wrapped around my mine and together they wowed.“We swear it.”
