“I’m used to being in the cold. Remember, I climb in and out of a refrigerated truck all day long,” he points out. Pulling a knit cap out of pocket, he slips it on his head and tugs it down over his ears. “Now get inside.”

Deanna hurries upstairs and puts on a pot of coffee.

She quickly changes into something warmer and hurries back to the kitchen just as the coffee is finished brewing. Pulling the biggest mug down from the cabinet, she fills it all the way to the top.

Just as she’s getting ready to put on her coat again to head outside with the coffee, she hears Gavin struggling outside the door.

“Deanna?”

“Look how precious he is!” Deanna exclaims the moment she sees him in Gavin’s arms.

“Meow.”

“Can you get a towel or something?”

Rushing to the hallway, she pulls a fluffy cream colored blanket from one of the shelves. “This might be better than a towel.”

Gavin places the kitten inside the blanket and hands the bundle to her. “I don’t know what you want to do with this, but it belongs to you now.”

Resting his head against her shoulder, the kitten begins to purr.

“Would you look at that!” Gavin shakes his head.

Chapter Ten

“Is it warm enough for you?” she asks, taking the spot across from Gavin.

“I told you I’m fine,” he insists. “But I would like another cup of coffee if there’s any left.”

Jumping to her feat, Deanna scoops his empty mug up off the coffee table and heads to the kitchen. Even if she didn’t have more, she’d put on a fresh pot, if it meant she’d get to spend more time with him. She couldn’t believe they’d chatted for over two hours.

“Looks like I need to stop by the grocery store and pick up some food in the morning. This little guy has made himself at home already.”

“You might want to get a litter box too. He’d be crazy to want to go back outside, seeing how much warmer it is in here versus being out in the cold.” Gavin wraps his hands around the mug and brings it to his lips. “Mmm. I can’t get over how good this smells.”

“Coffee Loft coffee is some of the best around. I was hooked after my first cup.”

“Is that why you bought into the franchise?” he asks.

“It’s a long story, but if you’ve got time…”

“Good morning,” Gavis says before climbing down from his truck. “How’s the soft grand opening going?”

“Gavin, I might be having a panic attack?” Deanna manages to say. She’d slipped away from the front long enough to call him. Who knows what kind of chaos was going on by now.

“Baby, what’s wrong?”

“I’m running low on whole milk. I’m pretty sure I still have plenty of half and half, but I just brought the last crate of whole to the front.”

“You’ve gone thru that much already? It’s not even opening day.”

“I know. That’s why I’m in a panic. What am I going to do?” Tears begin to pool in her eyes and she reaches up to wipe them away. Now is not the time for a meltdown.

“Have you thought about calling the milk man?”

Deanna grows silent on the other end. She can’t believe he just asked if she’d considering calling the milk man. Seriously?
