“Maybe I should stay with you.” Levi felt that Maggie needed someone to be with her.

“No need. I only ate some bad fish. I’ll get over this.” Maggie’s voice toughened. “Let’s go to urgent care so I can get over this. Then you can go to church for us.”

For us?

Was there such a thing?

“Don’t miss church on account of me.”

This was the Maggie whom Levi knew. She was vulnerable every now and then, but she was never lost. In spite of interruptions to her daily life, she remained steadfast in the things she knew she must do. Levi supposed that kept her grounded when work and life became chaotic.

“One sec.” Levi picked up the trash can.

“What are you doing?”

“Putting a new liner on this trash can. We’re going to take it with us. Don’t want you to throw up all over my pickup truck.” Levi found a clean liner in the kitchen pantry and swapped out the liner.

He came back and helped Maggie on her feet.

The whole time, the words that Maggie had written on the note bothered him.

Say goodbye to Levi.

What did Maggie mean by that?

“Where’s my phone?” Maggie picked up her phone from the coffee table. It was out of battery.

“You can charge it up in my truck,” Levi said.

“Okay.” She handed her phone to him.

Levi put on his sport coat.

“Is that all you have? It’s cold out.” Maggie pointed to the coat closet by the door. “Malachi left his jackets in there. He doesn’t need them in Florida. See if one fits you.”

Levi found an insulated jacket that fit him and hung up his coat on the same hanger. “Do you and your brother only wear goose down coats?”

“Yeah. You know we don’t like cold weather. Why Malachi jumped on the first opportunity to move to Florida.”

In the truck, Levi used Maggie’s extension cord to plug her phone into his dashboard charger.

As soon as the juice reached the phone, Levi saw that Maggie had missed messages from him, but also… Alden. He couldn’t see what the messages were, but it said right there on her pop-up notifications that Alden had texted her fifteen times.

Fifteen! What on earth? What for?

Levi had never been jealous of anyone before until now.

Wait a minute.

Why would he be jealous of Alden? It had been his fault that Maggie was sick now. Alden had taken her to eat seafood on Friday night, and that was how Maggie got food poisoning or something.

So yeah, why would Levi be jealous of Alden? The latter did Maggie no good.

As for Levi and Maggie, their relationship had been only platonic in the last three years. It had gone well for them since they were both single and dateless.

Now Alden had slipped into the picture and attempted to ruin Levi’s view.

For the first time in their friendship, Levi began to realize that perhaps Maggie was more than just a friend to him. He wanted Maggie to himself, and not share her with Alden.
