Atlanta was her hometown. She and Malachi might be two of the rare Georgia residents who had been born in Atlanta. There were many transplants in the city and transient residents as well. At least half of her friends were from out of town.

Even Levi had been born in Savannah. Speaking of which, Maggie wondered if Levi was planning to spend Christmas in Savannah, as he had done for many years.

“Let’s pray.” Pastor Kim’s voice popping out of the laptop speakers reminded Maggie to focus.

She closed her eyes and asked God to forgive her mind for wandering.

Chapter Eight

Maggie woke up to the smell of chicken soup and the noise of pots and pans in the old kitchen. She opened her eyes groggily, turned?—

And rolled off the edge.

Her body landed on a rug, and her ankle hit something hard. “Owww!”

She opened her eyes. Wrapped in a blanket, she was on the floor rug in between the couch and the coffee table. She had lost a sock, but the flannel pajama pants covered most of her legs.

Something metallic dropped in the kitchen, and Maggie heard footsteps running across the oak floor toward her.

“Are you okay?” Levi’s voice.

Levi and her brother were the only two single men in her life who were allowed to come and go in her house. They both had their own set of keys to the Jacobs family home.

However, right now, Maggie wished Levi wasn’t there.

How embarrassing it was for her to fall off the couch!

She tried to get up. Levi extended two arms to her and pulled her up. She sat back down on the couch, blanket still wrapped around her.

“What time is it?” She rubbed her ankle.

“Three o’clock.”

“What?”

“Your lunch is in the fridge. I ate mine because I was famished.”

Maggie closed her eyes and drew a deep breath. Okay, she was watching the sermon online. She stayed awake through the entire sermon about seeking God’s will—Pastor Kim seemed determined to finish that series before he preached about Christmas—but she must have fallen asleep at the closing prayer.

And slept for a good three hours.

“Are you hungry? Want your lunch now?” Levi asked. “Chicken soup won’t be ready until dinner.”

Maggie felt a little hungry. “Yeah. What did you buy for me? I can eat something.”

She tried to get the blanket off but it went around her. She got up and unwrapped the blanket. “I’m going to wash my face.”

Levi nodded as Maggie made her way to her bedroom and the bathroom inside.

She had brushed her teeth this morning, but for good measure, she brushed her teeth again. After her face felt clean and smelled of fresh soap, she returned to the living room.

Levi was wearing Malachi’s apron and washing dishes in the old farmhouse sink. So domestic.

Behind him, something was bubbling in the stock pot on the stove.

“Did you bring the stock pot?” Maggie didn’t have one.

Levi nodded. “I’ll have to take it home with me. Your dishwasher is too low for the big pot.”
