All these thoughts floated in Maggie’s mind that she forgot about Levi, still in front of her, still leading her to their seats, and still holding her hand.

This was the first time in their three years of friendship that he had held her hand.

In front of everybody at church!

Maggie pulled her hand back, but Levi gripped it more. He glanced back and gave her a slight smile.

They made their way into the middle of a row and sat down.

Maggie looked around. “These are great seats. We can see the orchestra clearly, and the choir too. Good job, Levi.”

“Glad to help.” Levi looked pleased.

Under the sanctuary lights, he didn’t look distressed at all.

“What a surprise to see Soline and her husband here tonight,” Maggie said. “Did you know they were coming?”

“They’re not on social media much, so I didn’t know until Soline called out my name.”

“She did?”

“Yep. In the crowd.”

“You heard her voice in the crowd…”

Levi nodded, but then added, “I can also pick out your voice in a crowd.”

“Really? Mine is not high pitched like Soline’s.”

“But I recognize your laughter.” Levi lowered his voice, almost whispering in Maggie’s ear. “During those dark times in my life last year, you cried with me and laughed with me. Your laughter was my medicine, Mags. Did you know that?”

Laughter. Medicine.

“Yes, I do know that verse from Proverbs 17:22,” Maggie replied.

A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.

“The funniest one in the family has to be Malachi. He takes after Dad. When the two get together, they make Mom and me laugh until we cry.” Maggie chuckled. “Mom said not to let Malachi make speeches at my wedding because everyone would be in tears.”

Oops.

“Your wedding?” Levi’s eyebrows rose.

“Just a private joke between mother and daughter. Nothing to do with you.”

“Nothing at all? Are you sure? Your father likes me, you know. We were in the same disaster relief team three years ago.”

“They may not like you when they do a closer inspection.”

“What’s not to like about me?”

“I can name a few flaws.”

“I can name your flaws too,” Levi retorted.

Someone in the row behind them hushed him as the lights went down and the conversation was over.
