He waved a hand dismissively. “Did you read the dossier?”

“On the tigers, yes. I got about halfway through the one for the wolves.”

“Midas is married now,” Brent said as he looked at a laptop.

“I think you mean mated,” Ashley corrected.

“Right,” he said, rolling his eyes. “Same difference.”

“You know it’s not, but I’ll play along. If he’s not my target, then what or who is?”

“He’s still your target, but I think getting to him or his mate will be tough.”

She’d heard through their people’s grapevine that Brent had tried several times to fuck with the tigers and failed miserably, ending with the loss of numerous lives, only humans and no tigers.

They’d failed to kill the king or the queen in the cabin. Brent was lucky to escape with his life. He’d underestimated the tigers, which he should have known better than to do.

“So?” she prompted.

“So, I want you to spy on them. Find a way to infiltrate their ranks and take them out. I want an actionable plan in a week.”

She stared at him for a long moment, then nodded. “Where am I staying?”

Buck appeared with a key and notecard with an address. “I’ve got a place for you in Goshen, it’s about ten minutes from Whisper Creek.”

She took the key and card. “Anything else?”

“No. You know the drill. I’ll expect a report in twenty-four hours.”

“Of course.” She stuck out her hand and he shook it. She grabbed her jacket, walked out of the room, and heard the door lock behind her. Brent had gotten a little paranoid since he’d come to Cleveland. But the old saying was true,it wasn’t paranoia if people were really out to get you.

And people were definitely out to get Brent. He’d made far too many enemies over the years trying to take out shifters. She had too, but he was the head of the organization. She was just his number one spy.

And she’d never have gotten into this business if it weren’t for that one night when she lost the most important person in the world to her and the authorities sided with the monsters.

She slipped her jacket on and braced against the chilly January weather. LA had been lovely. Cleveland’s weather sucked. She couldn’t wait to get back to LA, but first, she had to figure out how to take out the tigers so she could go home.

The sooner the better.

ChapterTwo

Romeo Dawson settled in bed, lying on his back, and slipped his arm under his pillow. He stared at the ceiling while his tiger prowled in his head. His tiger was ready to settle down and start a family, and Romeo was too. The problem was he had no idea where his truemate was. He wasn’t entirely in a hurry, actually.

It was why he’d been in bed for at least an hour with no sleep in sight.

There were too many demons in his head.

Before he came to Cleveland and joined the ranks of the Whisper Creek tiger ambush, he’d been highly ranked in an ambush in Missouri, beholden to a king who wasn’t fit to carry the Whisper Creek king’s water.

When he’d shifted at sixteen, he’d been inducted into the ranks of the security team and worked his way up to private guard for the king, and then he’d been tasked with doling out punishments for the ambush members. With the king’s stringent rules and off-the-charts temper, Romeo had beenverybusy. He’d done terrible things in the name of serving a king who couldn’t have cared one iota about him.

Then he’d had to punish a male the king had relied on for years because another male caught the king’s ear and lied. Romeo had felt in his gut that his luck would run out at some point, and he’d grown swiftly weary of looking over his shoulder, wondering when—notif—one of his fellow ambush members would come for him.

So he’d left. Chosen to step away from his family and friends and hit the road in search of another ambush that wasn’t run by a loon with a god complex.

He’d found Midas in Whisper Creek and instantly fell in love with the small, mostly tiger town and the people who called it home. He’d risen through the ranks swiftly and now, after only a year, he was Midas’s number two male and his chief protector.

He didn’t have to punish anyone, he only had to keep Midas and the ambush safe.
