How would she explain why she was in the woods in the first place, let alone why she’d run away like her butt was on fire?

Would he accept her journalist cover story, and was she really okay with lying to him?

Yes. For now, anyway.

She wasn’t about to expose her secrets to a guy she didn’t know, especially one who could kill her quite easily.

She’d tell him the truth once she was sure she could trust him.

For the time being, she was still a spy, still trying to figure out how Brent could drive the tigers from Northern Ohio.

And shestilldidn’t trust shifters, not after what happened to her sister.

Her tiger had an uphill battle to get her to trust him, but she imagined that if anyone could do it, he could.

She was suddenly swung around and pressed against a tree, her breath gusting from her lungs.

Sexy! He’d caged her against a tree once more.

Her lungs burned as she forgot how to breathe in his presence.

He was intimidating, but she wasn’t actually afraid of him.

“What are you doing here?” he demanded.

She stared at him for a moment, taking in his golden eyes and stubble-filled cheeks. He smelled amazing, like the best cologne she’d ever smelled, made up of dark woods and sweet clover.

She gasped as her instincts kicked in before she passed out, then immediately burst into tears.

“I don’t know! I can’t stop thinking about you!”

ChapterTen

While tears wet her cheeks and she tried to get her raging emotions under control, her tiger stared down at her. She felt like he could see right through her, get to the root of all her secrets.

Damn, she didn’t like that.

Well, she kind of did, but generally speaking, a girl liked to havesomesecrets, and she was a girl with more than enough of them.

She inhaled shakily and wiped her cheeks with the backs of her hands.

“I’m s-sorry,” she said.

He was almost glaring at her, but then his eyes got an even darker gold color and he let out a purr that made her want to snuggle up against him. He still caged her against the tree, but he did ease a little away from her.

“What’s going on?”

She really liked the rumble of his voice. It made her think of bedrooms and candlelight.

Oh hell, she really needed to get sex off her mind. Which apparently was very hard to do around him.

Something within her wanted her to tell him everything—Brent, the anti-shifter group, all of Brent’s past doings and future plans—but she resisted. Rubbing the space over her heart, she said, “I couldn’t stop thinking about you. I didn’t sleep at all last night. I didn’t intend to come to find you, but I couldn’t stop myself from coming back to Whisper Creek.”

“So you came to my king’s house?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know where you live. I don’t even know your name.”

He grunted and lowered his hands. His whole body was tense, the tendons in his neck standing out, and his gaze still gold. She wondered if it was his tiger, if being around her had triggered his beast, but she didn’t ask. She wasn’t sure she wanted to know right now.
