Ashley and Romeo walked with the tigers as they made their way to a road that ran parallel to the factory, which was now a smoldering shadow in the darkness. Midas opened the passenger door for Maya and the second-row door for her and Romeo. Romeo jumped up first and wiggled his bulk on the seat to make room for Ashley. Midas shut the doors and got behind the wheel.

“We’ll go to our house first for a full recap. I know you’re exhausted, but we need to nail down some stuff first. We’ll have Tera and Mari meet us there for healing if needed. Then you can head to Romeo’s.”

“Did you want to see the dossier?” she asked, leaning against Romeo’s furry side.

“Yeah, I do. Give Maya the address. She’ll have some of our people run over and grab it.”

She rattled off the address and the code to get the key from the rental box hanging on the door and told them where to look for the files for the tigers and wolves.

Once that was handled, she closed her eyes and inhaled Romeo’s dark, sweet scent. She could have died tonight. Or he could have. Or one of the tigers who’d come to her rescue.

She was thankful the tigers had escaped any fatalities. She just wished that Brent hadn’t gotten away. He was never going to give up coming after the shifters in Cleveland, although he might decide that the tigers were too much trouble.

At least she hoped he would.

“Romeo?” she whispered.

He made a softmrowsound.

“Thank you for saving me, for coming for me.”

He purred and she snuggled a little closer to him, smiling as she drifted off to sleep.

ChapterTwenty-Two

Brent’s heart wouldn’t stop pounding, but he was doing his best not to look like he was panicking as he gripped the seatbelt and watched the scenery blur by. Richard was driving and there were two others in the vehicle with them. Behind their vehicle, two others followed, but he wasn’t sure how many people were actually in them.

His phone buzzed.

“Yeah?” he asked, pressing the speaker button.

“Buck’s dead.”

He blinked a few times. “Say again?”

“Buck’s dead. We saw George running along the woods away from the warehouse and we picked him up. He said he saw Buck get attacked by a tiger when he tried to take that bitch with him.”

Shit.

“Thanks.”

“We’re meeting at the new headquarters?”

“Yeah. Toss your phones. All of you. We need new vehicles too.”

“On it,” a man’s voice called loudly. Brent thought it was Francis, but he wasn’t sure.

Ending the call, Brent opened the window and tossed the phone out. Richard handed his phone over and Brent tossed it, along with the two other phones. Ashley, that traitorous bitch, had several numbers for the group, and he wasn’t about to risk anyone tracking them. The tigers were close to the vampires, and those fuckers seemed to have an unlimited set of resources when it came to tracking people.

Pressing the button to raise the window, he shuddered involuntarily. He turned up the heat in the old truck, but it didn’t stop the chill that eased through him.

He could have died today.

He’d thought the tigers would be easy pickings, but it turned out they were anything but.

“What’s the plan?” Richard asked.

“New phones, new vehicles. We’ll wait at the meet-up for a couple hours while we switch everything out, and then we’ll find a new headquarters.”
