“Your eyes just changed color,” he said with a chuckle, giving her another kiss. He hugged her and she rested her head in the crook of his neck, loving the way he smelled and how it felt to be held so closely. “You’re definitely part wolf, and I believe it means you’ve got long-life. But let’s not worry about it until we know, okay? You’re mine and I’m yours, no matter what.”

She let out a little sob as worry settled over her. “I just got you, I don’t want to lose you. A few decades isn’t going to be enough for me.”

He squeezed her a little tighter. “Me either. So let’s go to our place and check out the results.”

She nodded and hugged him back. They released each other and left the kitchen, grabbing their jackets on the way out the door. It was dark now, like the world had shut the door on the day that had nearly cost her everything.

They were quiet as they walked across the yards.

“I should get a new phone,” she said. “I tossed the one I had because I didn’t want Brent to track me.”

“We can do that tomorrow.” The house came into view. “Do you like this place?”

“Sure.”

“I mean for us to live in? Some houses are empty. We could move into a larger one or to a different part of town.”

She stepped onto the porch. “Don’t you need to be close to Midas?”

“Not anymore.”

He opened the door and let her inside, following and shutting it behind them. They stomped off the snow and took off their shoes and coats.

“Wait, what?”

“The number two can’t be mated.”

“Huh?”

He smiled at her, taking her hand and leading her to the couch. They settled together, his arm around her shoulders and her head on his chest. “Sweetheart, the number two can’t be mated because a mated male will always put his mate and family first. The reason I took over the position is because Jorah found his mate. And the reason Jorah took over is because Melo found his mate.”

“You can’t put me first and be a good number two?”

He kissed the top of her head and let out a short purr. “If there came a time when both your life and Midas’s or Maya’s were on the line, I would choose you every single time. No king wants his chief protector to have his sights on someone else’s safety, and no good male would ask another to put someone else above his mate.”

She didn’t realize that their being together would interfere with his place in the ambush. “What does that mean for your job?”

“I’ll still work for the construction company, that won’t change.”

“I mean your job in the ambush.”

“I’ll be a part of the security team, just not the second-in-command.” He tilted her chin until she looked at him. “I couldn’t care less, okay? I get you, and you’re the most important person in the world to me.”

“You’re the most important person in the world to me too.”

He handed her his phone. “The passcode is 1488.”

She swiped her thumb on the screen and entered the code. He’d downloaded the lab’s app when he was waiting for her to get the blood test done, so she just clicked on the button and waited for the app to load the results.

“My heart’s in my stomach,” she whispered.

“It’ll be fine, I promise.”

The hourglass rotated in the center of the screen and then the results appeared.
