“She shouldn’t blame us,” Rita said quietly. “We did the best we could.”

“Your best sucked,” Romeo said.

They ended the call without another word, and Romeo stared at the dark screen for a few moments before he closed the laptop and sighed. Ashley would be okay, he’d make sure of it. Maybe she’d never reconcile with her family over their lies, but maybe someday she would. Either way, she was his mate and he was going to be her family now. They both had blood on their hands from their not-so-pretty pasts, but they could start a new life together.

He sent a quick text to Midas to tell him what happened with Ashley’s chat with her family.

If you want to take off tomorrow from work to spend time with her, you can.

Thanks, Romeo texted.

“Romeo?” she called from the bedroom.

“Yeah, baby?”

“I need you.”

He rose to his feet and hustled to the room. She was curled up on the bed, looking sad and lost. He slid next to her, curling around her back and holding her close. Kissing her neck, he whispered, “I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay,” she said. “It’s good to know the truth now. I just wish I remembered my dad.”

“It’s awful that he had to go on the run with your mom because his pack didn’t like humans.”

“That probably means I can’t go visit them, huh?” She tilted her head back to give him a wry smile.

“I wouldn’t recommend it.”

She rested her head on his biceps and sighed. “Are you sure you want to have a truemate who’s got so much baggage I could fill the cargo hold of a plane?”

He chuckled. “One hundred percent.”

“I’m sorry that I messed up our night.”

“How did you mess up anything?”

“We were having such a nice time on our date and then I had to go and ruin it.”

“You didn’t ruin anything; you needed to know the truth.”

They lay in silence for a little while, then she yawned and rubbed her cheek on his arm. “Do you think our kids will be able to shift?”

“Probably, but whether they can or not, we’ll always tell them the truth.”

“Definitely. I have something else to confess.”

His tiger sat up in his head. “Oh?”

She rolled in his arms and kissed him. “When I first saw you? Through the binoculars in the woods?”

“Yeah?”

“I thought you were gorgeous. I thought you had the most lickable chest. In my head I called you Sexy McSexyPants.”

He stared at her, seeing the sincerity in her eyes mixed with humor.

“When I pressed you against that tree? I thought you were gorgeous, too, and I wanted to haul you over my shoulder and take you home.”

She put her hand on his cheek. “It’s only been a couple days since that night, but it feels like we’ve lived a lifetime since then.”
