I should tell her. I am not handling this well on my own. Okay, here goes. ‘I moved out of Jasper’s last night.’

‘No! Really? How did he take it?’

‘He wasn’t there.’

‘Ouch! But, when did you guys break up?’

‘We didn’t. I just…left.’ I shake my head, and a large tear unexpectedly rolls down my cheek.

‘I’m not doing anything after work. Wanna key his car and let the air out of his tyres?’ Lara suggests sincerely.

I can’t help smiling when she puts her hand over mine. ‘Let’s just save the criminal activity for a bit,’ I say. ‘He didn’t do anything, it’s all me.’

‘You. Really?’

‘Yeah.’

‘You have such huge blinkers on when it comes to that boy and I’m willing to bet it isn’t all you.’ She gives my hand a squeeze as lunch hits the table.

‘Can we talk about you?’ I ask, wiping another tear away.

‘Absolutely, babe. So, she’s still at my house.’

‘Why is your client’s girlfriend at your house, Lara?’ I groan.

‘It’s a bloody nightmare. Look!’ Lara shows me a picture on her phone. ‘She’s taking half-naked selfies in my bed and posting them. Those legs, though…’ She starts smiling.

‘Lara! Focus!’

‘Yes. Of course. Anyway, she’s turned things up a notch and I’m fucked if work finds out.’

‘Technically, I am “work”! You’re supposed to be hiding your shenanigans fromme.’

‘Please can you step in with CrimeSpree until I sort it? I’ll do all the work, you just have to go to the meetings.’

‘I’ll go to your next meeting and only your next meeting; only because I know it’s on Thursday.’

‘Thank you, thank you, thank you, Aari, you’re the best boss!’

‘I’m not. I’m terrible. I can’t believe I am covering for you. Again. Lara, please give your client’s girlfriend back.’

‘I will. I stupidly told her to make herself at home and leave whenever she wanted yesterday. When I got back she’d made dinner and was prancing around in next-to-nothing, so I thought, in for a penny…’ She shrugs.

I can’t help the laughter that escapes. ‘You’ve got until Friday, Lara. After that, you’re on your own.’

‘It’ll be done. Scot’s honour.’

‘Scout’s honour, you mean.’

‘Do I look like I’ve ever been a Scout?’

‘If CrimeSpree starts asking uncomfortable questions, I’m sending him to you.’

‘Agreed. To repay the favour, I’m taking you to work drinks tonight. I’m not leaving you miserable in your hotel room. You’re obviously hiding from home because Dahlia and Hugh probably love Jasper more than they love you.’

‘Er, no thanks.’ I don’t correct her.

‘Why? You’re single now, so let’s live these ten minutes of freedom up because, let’s face it, that boy isn’t going to let you go.’
