‘Hey. How are you?’ she asks.

‘Embarrassed, but all right.’

‘Embarrassed? If anyone should be embarrassed, it’s this fool over here.’

She kicks Caleb hard. He shoots up, startled.

‘What happened!?’ he asks, and we burst out laughing.

‘Why?’ I laugh.

‘Your room-mate tried to sleep with me last night. I’d been on the couch all of ten seconds before he started hitting on me.’

‘She’s gay, Caleb,’ I fill him in.

‘It was worth a shot.’ Caleb gets up and stretches. ‘She looks even more gorgeous this morning.’

I turn around from the kettle and catch Caleb winking at Lara.

‘No!’ she shouts, before rushing to the guest bathroom. ‘You bastard!’

Caleb’s laughter fills the flat.

‘What’s going on?’ I ask him.

‘We had a little bet last night. I won.’

When Lara emerges from the bathroom, I notice a pair of curly moustaches that have been drawn on her top lip in single lines. Caleb hadn’t been shy with the curls.

‘How am I supposed to get this off?’

‘Figure it out. I need a shower. Ariella, can I have some coffee?’

‘Sure.’ I smile and turn to Lara. ‘You look cute, though.’

‘I’m going to spit in his coffee.’ She charges at me.

‘No you’re not, Inspector Clouseau. You shouldn’t be making bets with Caleb. What was it?’

‘First person knocked out loses.’

‘Looks like you’ve met your match. Want me to rustle up something fun for breakfast? Do you need a painkiller?’

‘Too many questions. I’d love a painkiller, yes to breakfast – loads of it! Are you okay? What happened last night?’

‘It was my fault. I didn’t mean to scare you. Jasper met someone he liked at Isszy’s party, so I left. I had a little attack and he offered to help, but I walked away from him. I was stupid.’

‘I’m fairly certain that wasn’t what happened, Aari. You’re a little emotional, but not irrational.’

I don’t want to get into it with Lara, because I need to stay calm. ‘What are you up to today?’

‘You’re trying to get rid of me but I’m not going anywhere. I’m going to hang out here with you all day…and you’re going to help me get back at Caleb. How do you live with him?’

‘It’s quite easy once you get over the women coming in and out. He’s terrible…’ I laugh. ‘But he’s actually a good person.’

Lara points at her moustache. ‘Would a good person do this?’

She disappears to try to get the moustache off while I cook us a huge breakfast. Caleb returns as I plate up.
