“So you’re not getting anywhere with Ben?” Diane asked.

“Not what I’d like,” Jolene said. “But again, this isn’t about me. It’s about Grant and his big mouth.”

He laughed. “Leave it to you to turn this on someone else.”

“Well, she is right,” Diane said. “You and your big mouth. Let’s just hope there isn’t too much damage control. We’ll have to check in with Richard tomorrow.”

“Yeah,” he said. “I’m afraid he is going to get drenched from the storm too. I noticed the looks going his way. It’s like Elise finally pieced it together.”

“Keep us posted,” Jolene said and hung up after that.

“I feel bad for Richard. Jim too. Though I think Elise is going to take it out on her father more than anyone.”

They knew Elise had almost put it together not that long ago and Richard had fibbed some. It might come back to bite him.

“Elise loves her father. They might have a little blowup, but it will work out. Trust me here.”

“If you say so,” he said.

“It always does, as Jolene said. Have some faith.”

“I’ve got you so that is my faith,” he said.

“Good way to suck up,” his wife said.

He picked up his wife’s foot that she put in his lap. “How about a rub? Does that help too?”

“Always,” Diane said, wiggling her toes.

He massaged her feet now just as he had when she was carrying his sons.

“You still have the touch.”

“Maybe because you still touch my heart the same as you have for decades. We aren’t bad people wanting this for everyone else, are we?” he asked.

His wife laughed at him. “Never. Don’t let it get to you. We all have hiccups. I’m surprised those two haven’t had more with the way they were before they got together. Put it from your mind for now.”

Easier said than done, but he didn’t have much of a choice.

SET AGAINST ME

Gabe wished he could put the fight that was brewing from his mind, but there was no way that was going to happen.

At least no way he could see that he could change the course of the hurricane that was going to unleash wind and rain on him like never before.

They got back to his house, the silent drive home more than he could handle. But he didn’t want to start this on the drive back either.

“We should talk,” he said as soon as they walked into his house.

“I’m just waiting for you to start,” she said.

Her tone was sharp. There was anger for sure, but a little bit of hurt in her eyes.

“You knew all along the Fierces were trying to set me up. They were you too.”

“My father told them no. To take me off the list.”
