Last night, she’d gotten home and realized she didn’t have her jacket on her. Her shoes were on the wrong feet too. It waspretty pathetic she didn’t feel it until she walked in the door stumbling like a drunk.

She almost wished she had alcohol to blame for her behavior.

The best sex of her life was ruined by her stupidity.

She could have just held her self-doubt and regret in like a normal person, then come home and had a big bowl of ice cream or a shot of liquor.

Instead, the shame crept up her neck choking her over her impulsive behavior.

Truthfully, it wasn’t the behavior with Gabe as much as the cause to show up on his door.

It slammed into her chest hard that he could have felt used again. Like he accused her of doing before.

That hadn’t been her motivation back then or now.

But telling him that would be even more embarrassing.

It was best that she got out of there and gave them both some space.

Yet last night in bed she hated herself when she saw the fun-loving and happy Gabe pissed off and yelling at her. The confusion more visible than the anger.

She knew she owed him an explanation, but she couldn’t get the words out of her mouth to make much sense, so how could she say it to him?

Her father’s words hit home.

She was like her mother, but she could correct her behavior. She could apologize.

Last night she decided she didn’t want to lose what she had with Gabe, but she wasn’t so sure she could get him to understand.

If she didn’t talk to him and try to explain, it wouldn’t matter.

She wanted something in her life to matter.

Swallowing one's pride was a hard thing to do.

Elise picked her phone up and sent him a text asking if they could talk tonight.

He replied quickly to come to his house after work. He wanted to do it face-to-face.

It was the least she could do. She owed him that much.

Elise looked at the clock and saw it was only ten in the morning. Somehow she had to get through the rest of this day and figure out what she was going to say.

TRUTHFUL STATEMENT

“Pizza?” Gabe asked when he opened the door to Elise after work.

“I figured the least I could do was bring dinner. Maybe as a peace offering.”

He took it out of her hand. “Pizza doesn’t make up for an explanation,” he said. He didn’t want to be a hard ass, but he needed answers and he knew she’d appreciate him not dancing around the issues.

“No,” she said. Her eyes landed on her jacket hanging on the banister and then the hole in the wall. She turned to check his hands out but didn’t say a word, only lifted her eyebrows.

“It seemed the thing to do at the time,” he said.

She nodded her head. “Let’s eat if you don’t mind. I’m still trying to wrap my head around what to say.”
