“Just like you aren’t like other women, I’m not like other men. Why can’t we be ourselves now?”

“We can,” she said. “I guess this was easier than I thought it was going to be.”

“Don’t make a habit of building things up in your head before you know the answers.”

“It might be another fight we’ve got in our future.”

“Good to know and we can prepare,” he said.

“I don’t want anyone to know about this,” she said, waving her hand back and forth.

“Why?”

“First. We are trying to go from oil and water to water and soap.” He laughed at her. “What’s so funny?”

“I had that thought about oil and water and soap not that long ago. Funny how you did too.”

“As I said, this is new and going to take some work. No reason to let people know just yet. Maybe a week from now it’s just not going to work.”

“Meaning you might get sick of me being a slob and I could get annoyed with your moodiness?”

“I’m not that moody. Just around you. It’s more like I say it how it is and many don’t like that.”

“I do like it,” he said. “And if we are being honest, I might have been purposely poking at you for years. I wanted to see that snarkiness.”

She frowned. “I figured as much. Yet I fell for it each time.”

“Guess you’re kind of easy.”

“That’s not something I’ve heard before,” she said. “But back to why I want to keep this quiet for now. Second, we have a working relationship and have to navigate this.”

“We can be mature enough to do it,” he said. “Or I can.”

“Touché,” she said, grinning. “But I can be too.”

“There is another reason, isn’t there?” he asked.

She nodded. “Third. The Fierces. They’ve got this idea about setting me up. If they get any sniff of us they will be on us like colors on the rainbow. No, thank you. I don’t need or want that pressure. I’ve told my father to make it clear that they stay away from me. So far they haven’t tried or said one word to me about things.”

He smirked at her. “It’s not a secret what they are trying to do with people.”

“Have they said anything to you? Are they trying to set you up with anyone?”

“I’m sure in their mind they are,” he said. “I’m good at finding my own women.”

“So we are agreeing to keep this quiet?” she asked. “For now.”

“For now,” he said.

“Then maybe we can go up to your room on those clean sheets and try again?” she asked.

He moved closer to her and put his hand out to pull her off the stool she’d been sitting on at the island. He’d been standing on the other side while they talked.

She got off the stool and put her hand in his. She thought he was taking her to his room.

Instead he pulled her close to him and wrapped his arms around her.

He hugged her and she wasn’t expecting that.
