She wondered if anyone else had noticed it.

Nah. Couldn’t be.

The Fierces were smart people. They would have noticed it and then said something.

Instead they let it slip they had someone lined up for Gabe.

Nope, not happening.

She’d have to put a stop to that and she’d be talking to Gabe about it soon.

“Keep doing what you are,” her father said. “You be you like you’ve done most of your life.”

“That’s right,” she said. “I’m not changing for anyone.”

“Well,” her father said. “You might want to change some things.”

She laughed at the dry tone her father used. “You know what I mean.”

“I do,” her father said. “And I’m proud of you for being the bigger person. I’m sure you’re going home to relax after this long day.”

“I am,” she said.

“And put any interaction you had with your mother from your mind. Never let it dictate your actions ever again.”

It’s almost as if her father could read her past and know that she’d done that way too much in her life.

“I won’t,” she said. “Trust me. I learned my lesson.”

“Didyou get anything out of Elise?” Grant asked Richard an hour later.

“No,” Richard said. “My daughter is a tough nut to crack. She said she was going home to relax and I believe it. What about you guys?”

Grant was home with Diane and they had Carolyn and Garrett on speakerphone.

“We tried,” Carolyn said. “I think we might have put a bug in her ear that we were moving on with Gabe. Not sure it will do much, but it’s worth a shot. As you know, Jim and Stacy didn’t have much to offer either.”

“I wish I had more,” Richard said. “The only thing I can offer is that my daughter seems to be a different person now. I can’t push her too much or she’ll know that I know. She seems happy and that is all I want out of my children.”

“That is all we ever want,” Garrett said. “We’ll get there, the question is how long it’s going to take.”

“I’ll keep working on Elise,” Richard said. “I got thinking that she’s put this bright sign up to everyone that she and Gabe don’t get along and then how does she come out and tell everyone they are dating?”

“Hmm,” Diane said. “I guess I didn’t think of it that way. Let’s hope it comes down to Gabe working on her and soon. Holding back we know hasn’t been easy.”

“Tell me about it,” Richard said. “At least Jim and Stacy get to talk to their son about it. I can’t even talk to Royce.”

“Royce doesn’t suspect it?” he asked. He thought for sure Chloe would have caught it since she had so quickly when she was on the top of the target list.

“If Royce or Chloe know or suspect,” Richard said, “they are keeping quiet. They’ve been a little busy these past few months.”

“Good point,” Diane said. “Now that the wedding has passed, we’ll see if we can get things moving.”

“Keep me posted and I’ll do the same,” Richard said and hung up.

“Well,” Grant asked. “Now what?”

“Now we call Jolene,” Diane said. “She told us to call her after the wedding.”
