“Not surprised,” he said. “Those men have a long reach. I don’t normally get those details.”

His father, sister and mother handled that. He did his part and then moved on to other projects. They had a big apartment complex they’d be starting at the end of April, so they had to haul ass on this one. They’d be working on that until Fall easily along with other smaller things that came up.

They were big enough to have multiple crews to take on smaller projects, but he knew they’d be hiring more soon for the next project.

“I don’t blame you,” she said. “I wish we had it as easy as Olsen’s. I hate to say like you. You do your work and move on.”

“Royce does seem to get the brunt of it. When is your new person starting?”

“Carmen starts in a few weeks. She had to give more notice at her last job and she is moving closer too. It’s fine. We’ve got time.”

“Good,” he said. “We should take advantage of things while we can and get even busier.”

He was throwing it out there to see if she was biting or not.

“We can do that,” she said. “Let me think some. I mean I did give you a drawer at my house and all. Isn’t that a step?”

He laughed. “You did. This weekend, maybe I’ll leave a change of clothing there.”

“I’ll do the same at your place. That is if you find a drawer that is empty and clean. You’re not washing my clothes though.”

He grinned. “I wouldn’t think of it.”

“I will let you finish up so you can get on with your night and go home.”

He held back the sigh. So much for seeing her tonight.

“I’ll talk to you later,” he said and they hung up.

Which meant tomorrow. They didn’t talk more than once or twice a day no matter how much he wanted to.

A BIG STEP

“Are you sure you’re fine with me not being here?” Elise asked her father a few weeks later on Easter Sunday.

“Go to Gabe’s parents’ house,” her father said. “I mean it.”

“But I’ve never missed a holiday with you. Not even after you and Mom split.”

Many would think that was odd, but it didn’t happen. Her mother normally went away at the holidays. Could be that Elise threw such a fit about wanting to be with her father too.

And though she’d dated over the years, when she had a boyfriend on a holiday, it was spent with her family.

“Then I think at your age it’s time you do that. It’s Easter. It’s not a big deal. Royce and Chloe will be here later. They are having breakfast with her parents and Dane and the kids. You know that.”

Dane had to return his kids to his ex-wife by eleven so she knew it was breakfast and an Easter egg hunt at that grandparents’ house.

If her father was alone today she wouldn’t have agreed to go to Jim and Stacy’s house.

“I guess if you’re sure.”

“Elise,” her father said, laughing. “Seriously. What is going on? Normally you aren’t so shy about anything in life.”

“I’m not shy,” she said. “I know Gabe’s parents. I’ve met them before.” Not his siblings though. Jocelyn and Jayce would be there. Which meant she couldn’t stay at Gabe’s last night because his brother came yesterday.

She stayed on Friday night and then went home yesterday morning. Gabe told her to stay, but she said no way. No reason for it. But since Jayce was going home after dinner today, she did agree to spend the night tonight.
