Page 24 of Never Let Me Go

“Excuse me,” I call to her, and she turns, batting her lashes and simpering up at me. Like they all do.

“Yes?” she giggles, flipping her hair over her shoulder. “I’m Jade.”

Her long taloned hand is thrust out at me and when I shake it, she doesn’t let go.

“I noticed you were speaking with Anica,” I tell her, and she looks slightly confused. “The woman in the purple dress.”

I raise my eyebrows as she simpers and giggles. Moving closer to me, her hand slides up my arm, her voice becoming overly breathy. “Oh, yes. I was giving her some sisterly advice.”

Sisterly advice? About what? How to bat your lashes?

“What advice?”

She laughs, pressing her tits up against my arm as she does so. “Oh, you know. That she shouldn’t be so obvious about her crush. Especially when he’s so clearly out of her league. I let her know it was a little obvious and pathetic.”

I blink at Jade in shock. Anica has a crush? This is the first I’m finding out about it. I’m surprised by how that statement makes me feel. I can’t exactly place what the emotion is, but I know I don’t like it. I don’t like the emotion, and I don’t particularly like the idea of Anica having a crush on someone, either. What is she, twelve?

“And who does she have a crush on?” I grin conspiratorially at Jade, hoping that she’ll tell me so that I can get a good look at this asshole. Jade bursts out laughing again, as though I’ve made the world’s best joke. When I don’t laugh along with her, she looks up at me uncertainly, making a rather inelegant snorting noise.

“You’re serious.”

As a heart attack. I wait for her to continue. Jade laughs again. “Why, you, darling.”

Wait, what? Anica has a crush onme? I’ve never picked up on that.

“Why on earth would you think Anica has a crush on me?” I snort, frowning at her. Jade smirks, raking her nails over my arm.

“Oh, come on. She couldn’t take her eyes off you all night. Surely you noticed.” She rolls her eyes at me, and I swallow a smile. So, Anica doesn’t have a crush. She was doing her damn job. Jade is talking again, something about “country bumpkins” and being able to spot them a mile off.

“Anica is from Chicago,” I reply promptly. But Jade brushes off my comment, pressing herself even closer to me.

“Let’s not waste any more time talking about some nobody. What say we find somewhere to have dinner?” Her breathy tone is back, but I offer her a tight smile, stepping away from her, and bidding her a goodnight. I go in search of my coat, messaging Antonio as I wait for the coat check girl to grab it.

ANTONIO: I am returning from dropping Ms. Kasan off. I will be arriving momentarily.

Well, at least she had the sense to call Antonio to take her home. Tapping my foot impatiently, I watch the numbers flick over in the elevator, striding through the foyer the moment the doors slide open and out to where Antonio is jumping out of the town car, holding the door open.

I could ask him about Anica, but then I would feel twelve, so I play with my phone instead. I consider messaging Anica that I’m heading home but decide against it. As Manhattan flashes past the window, I contemplate the idea of Anica.

Uncle Bill said I couldn’t bring women home to sleep with. He said nothing about not sleeping with the woman who is already in my home. I picture her, as I brush a finger against my lips. She’s cute. She’s easy to talk to. She has a nice body. It’s an out of the box solution to my blue ball problem. I wonder if maybe Jade was a little bit right. If maybe Anica has a crush on me. Women know about these things, right?

When I walk in, Anica is barefoot, dressed in jeans and a loose T-shirt, washing up a mug in the sink. Dropping my keys on the sideboard, I cross to her, leaning against the breakfast bar.

“Why did you leave the party?”

Anica glances at me, shrugging. “I watched you for a few hours. I saw you in your party element. I didn’t really want to be in the way, so I came home.”

A slight blush skates across her pale cheeks and there’s clearly more to that story. I wonder exactly what Jade said to her. If it was even close to what she said to me, it can’t have been pleasant for Anica to hear. I want to tell her to ignore that bitch, but Anica’s face is shuttered, and it’s clear she doesn’t want to talk to me about it, so I let the moment pass.

“Well, goodnight,” Anica mutters, turning to head off to bed. Before I know what I’m doing, my hand shoots out, my fingers closing around her wrist, stopping her from leaving. Anica looks up at me in surprise, opening her mouth to ask what I’m doing.

Reaching over with my free hand, I cup her jaw, lowering my mouth to cover hers. Anica is frozen beneath my lips for a moment. Fuck. I hope I haven’t misread the situation badly. Imagine the lawsuit. But before I can lift my head and go into damage control, her lips part. Thank fuck.

My tongue delves into her mouth, tangling with hers, her free hand moving to rest lightly on my waist. I deepen the kiss with a groan, releasing her wrist as my hand slides around her waist, pressing her against me. She tastes sweet like she has just consumed honey tea. I’m enjoying myself more than I would have thought possible when considering the idea of Anica in the town car on the way home. That’s a good sign and bodes well for my plan.

Her other hand slides up my chest as her head tips back further, allowing me greater access to her mouth. I have no idea how long I kiss her, but when I eventually lift my head, Anica is a little dazed. She blinks, her eyes focusing on my face. Her cheeks quickly stain bright red, and she scampers away from me. I let her go reluctantly.

“This wouldn’t be a good idea,” she mutters, turning and hurrying away. I hear her bedroom door slam closed while I stare after her.
