Page 31 of Never Let Me Go

Stepping away from Ani, I button my cock away as she sets her clothes to rights and slides off the desk. She arches an eyebrow at me.

“Was there anything else, or was that it?”

I swallow a grin. Christ, that was sexy. It’s not a side she shows much, but right now, it was gorgeous. Two can play at that game.

“That will be all.”

She smiles coolly at me, turning toward the door, gathering her ever-present iPad as she does.

“I’ll see you this evening.”

Ani nods over her shoulder, sliding out of the door, and closing it behind her. Sinking back into my chair, I watch the door close behind her and smirk. Maybe Timmy’s wife, Angie, was right with what she said in England at Christmas. There definitely is a benefit in dating smart women. If I’d brought some model in here and told Christine to take a long lunch, she’d have knownexactlywhat I intended to do in here. But withAni, well, no one will be the wiser. She won’t have to feel like everyone knows her business. I know she wouldn’t like that.

Tapping my fingers on my desk, I pull up my emails and ask Christine to clear my schedule for the rest of the day when she gets back from her long lunch. Hitting send, I pull up Ani’s contact details in my phone.

DAVID: You’re playing hooky for the rest of the day.

ANICA: Am I? Won’t I get in trouble for that kind of behavior?

DAVID: Boss’s orders. Be in the lobby in fifteen minutes.

Ani is waiting for me when I arrive downstairs, her coat over one arm, her purse over the other, watching people walking past the building outside with interest. Striding over to her, I slide my hand up her back and she glances up at me with a smile.

“Why are we playing hooky?” she asks, grinning conspiratorially. “Not that I’m complaining or anything.”

Antonio has pulled up outside and I guide Ani over to it, sliding in after her. She turns to me expectantly and I reach over and pluck up her hand where it is lying on the seat between us. Turning it over in her hands I grin at her while she watches me silently.

“Remember on your first night, when you said that one thing you really wanted to do in New York was go to the top of the Empire State Building?”

She nods slowly, seemingly surprised that I remembered one throwaway comment she made her first night. Hell, I’msurprised I remembered it. I only did because it had been such a cute thing for her to say.

“Have you been yet?”

She’s been in New York for almost three weeks now. Ani slowly shakes her head, but still looks adorably confused. Good. That makes my plan even better.

“It’s always busy on the weekends. It’s much better to go now.”

Ani blinks at me, her eyes widening and her mouth falling open as understanding dawns.

“We’re going to the Empire State Building?” she squeaks adorably.

“All the way to the top.”

She’s practically bouncing in her seat as we pull up outside, and Antonio opens her door. Placing my hand on her back, I steer her toward the line to the elevators, which, thankfully, isn’t too long. I knew it would be a good idea to go mid-week. Ani peels off toward the stairs. Uh, what? I catch her as she walks through the door, pausing at the first step and tipping her head back to look up.

“Uh, you’re planning on walking up?”

She glances over at me in surprise, laughing. “All one thousand, five hundred and seventy-six steps.”

My eyes travel over her work attire, fixing on her kitten heels. “In those shoes?”

Ani’s gaze follows mine down to her feet, and she frowns at them.

“Good point,” she mutters. Yeah, it is. I move to guide her back to the elevator line. But the crazy woman kicks off her shoes, bending and retrieving them, and flexing her stockinged toes. I stare blankly at her. Surely not.

“You can’t be serious.”

She grins mischievously at me. “If you’re afraid you can’t keep up, you can always get the elevator. I’ll meet you at the top.”
