“But, sir.”

“What?” I snap.

“This is the third day in a row that I’ve been stationed on a post. Is there nothing else I can do?”

His body language tightens as I stomp over.

“I am the captain here, not you! So unless you’re looking to spend time in the cells for defiance, I highly suggest you obey your orders. Do I make myself clear?”

“Y-yes sir!”

“That’s right. You should know how high tensions are right now with the other kingdoms. If we’re not prepared, a war can break out that we’re certain to lose! Now get to it.”

All four soldiers break away. I grunt, running a hand over my tired face.

“I need to cool off somehow.” I moan, slumping into a lone chair at the command post. “These imbeciles are making me want to ascend to the highest tower and jump off.”

I glance over to the one part of my life that’s not driving me crazy, seeing her smile at me.

I wink discreetly at Krista. However, I don’t smile back. I’ve got an appearance to maintain with my subordinates, and I’m certain that she understands.

After a short personal break, I return to the rest of my duties. I bark orders at soldiers coming in and out of the castle, assigning them to various jobs and tasks.

I hand out the usual verbal bashing to a new smith in the forge just before lunchtime. That’s when I’m able to get a few moments alone with Krista.

All seems to go well until I detect a strange hesitation from the human woman. Given how things had more than smoothed out between the two of us over the past couple of days, it comes as more of an interruption than a surprise.

“Is something wrong?” I ask, more snappily than I intend.

“No, not at all,” she answers, looking away.

I know a liar when I see one, having studied body language for the sake of interrogating prisoners.

“You’re not telling me the truth,” I hiss.

“What?” she asks, narrowing her brows in vexation. “Where’s all of this coming from, Lasta?”

“You tell me, Krista. You’re the one acting strangely here.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about. I saw you getting heated earlier with your men. You’re the one who seems out of sorts.”

I don’t like the insinuation of her tone. Growling, I turn away.

“Think whatever you want.”

With that, I storm in the opposite direction. Regret hits me almost immediately as soon as I’m a few feet away, wondering if my mood is causing me to lash out.

Maybe I should turn around.

I look over my shoulder to see that she’s already vanished amongst the bustling crowd of staff and soldiers. This only refuels my anger, so before I do anything stupid to someone, I turn my head down and march for the training rooms.

When I feel like this, I need to take it out on something. Today, that something would be the weights and training dummies on offer for the kill in the training area.

A good sweat would, at the very least, help me see things a little clearer for what they are. Right now, I need that more than anything. I’m unsure of where Krista and I stand, but one thing is for certain, I’m fucking pissed.

My warmup is nothing fancy, only me hurling weights around the room. As I do so, a group of others attempt to join in the hopes of exercising together.

“Get the fuck out of here and do not let me see you unless you want a weight dropped on your head.”
