“What guy? She isn’t doin’ any privates,” I tell him.

“He said that she’s his date,” he adds. I turn to look over my shoulder at Lyra, and she just shrugs.

“You brought your date here?”

“More like he brought me here,” she replies. I’m so fucking confused by all of this. None of this makes sense.

“What do you want me to tell him?” Ridge asks.

“Tell him to fuck off,” I answer before slamming the door shut in his face. Then I turn back to Lyra.

“You wanna explain this?”

“I don’t need to explain anything to you,” she snaps.

“You’re on my stage. Yeah, you do.”

“I’m not on it anymore, am I? You probably just fucked me over for tonight,” she says, sounding angry. Fucked her over? What the hell does that mean?

“Meanin’ what?”

“Meaning, I probably won’t get paid now!” I reach into my pocket and peel off a few hundred dollar bills before stomping across the room and stuffing them into her hand.

“Now talk!”

“I work for a company.”

“What company?”

“I don’t ask questions, Knight. I just do what I’m told to do,” she explains. What the hell is she talking about?

“This makes no sense.”

“Her name is Kimber. My friend Jessica got me the job.” As soon as Kimber’s name leaves her lips, I know. And my heart pounds harder in my chest.

“Kimber?” she nods. “You work for Kimber?” she nods once more. It hits me like a ton of bricks. Why I thought the scent in the hotel room was familiar. Why I knew the voice from somewhere, it was her. It was Lyra this whole time.

“How long have you worked for her?”

“Almost a month,” she says softly.

“Why?”

“I need the money. I have kids, remember?”

“And you couldn’t find somethin’ else to do with your time?”

“None that would pay me under the table.” As soon as the words left her mouth, I knew I was right. She’s running from something.

“What are you hidin’ from?”

“None of your business. Can I go?”

“No. You’re not goin’ anywhere with that guy,” I tell her.

“I have to. I won’t get paid,” she says.

“I just paid you. Probably more than he would.”
