“I’m not that close to you, Knight.”

“You’re closer than any other woman has been since my accident.”

“What happened?” I ask softly, hoping he’ll tell me.

“Not now. I don’t want to talk about that now,” he says, pulling his hand away from me, but I keep mine pressed against his chest. He looks me in the eyes before slowly lowering his gaze to my hand. I see his chest rising and falling rapidly, and I know he hasn’t been touched like this in a long time. Slowly, I let myfingers splay over his chest and gently begin to move them. I let just the tips touch him as I brush them over his ragged skin.

His chest keeps rising and falling quickly, a sign he isn’t sure about this, but I don’t stop. I want to touch him. I want to feel him, and now I am.

“You’re beautiful,” I whisper. Knight swallows hard, his hand coming up to cup my cheek. His thumb moves over my skin, igniting a flame inside of me.

“I don’t want to do this,” he says softly.

“I know you don’t, but you have to let someone in,” I tell him. He keeps his eyes on mine, a silent battle waging in his eyes. I can see the storm, the lightning flash in his eyes.

“It wasn’t so long ago. Everything was perfect. I had a girl who loved me and cared about me. It wasn’t enough for her. She wanted more.” Now, he looks away, leaving me confused. What does that even mean? I keep my fingers moving over the marred skin on his chest down to the waistband of his jeans. He reaches up and stops my hand from exploring lower, his hand wrapped around my wrist.

“She was angry with me. Pissed because I wouldn’t marry her. I … I just didn’t feel it. It didn’t feel right. She left before me. She was smart and had smart friends,” he says, shaking his head.

“What did she do?”

“How do you know she did anything?” he asks, looking back at me.

“I can see the pain in your eyes. She hurt you. What did she do, Knight?” He swallows hard, his throat bobbing.

“She destroyed my bike while I was still inside tryin’ to process shit, so when I went out, I had no choice but to take the car. I opened the door, and the goddamn thing exploded.”

“She set you up?” My voice comes out angry because that’s how I feel. I’m angry for him. She did that to him? How could she? How could a person do that to another?

“Apparently, she and her friends did. Luckily, because of the way I was standin’, it only got this side,” he says, bringing my hand back up to the scarred skin.

“How bad was it?”

“It was bad. I was in the burn unit for a long time until I healed. My chest isn’t the only part of me burnt, Lyra.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’m scarred in other places,” he says, stepping back and letting my hand fall away from him.

Knight

Idon’t know what the hell I’m thinking, telling her this. Any fucking woman who has ever crossed my path after the accident has been turned off by what they see. It’s the main reason I keep to myself and don’t let anyone get close. It’s the reason I use Kimber’s girls. They don’t ask questions, and they don’t care as long as they get paid.

“I don’t care,” Lyra says as she stares into my eyes.

“You will.”

“No, I won’t.”

“They all care, Lyra! Every fuckin’ woman I’ve ever been with has cared.”

“I’m not other women, Knight. I thought you had figured that out by now.” She’s right. She isn’t like them. She’s different, better than they are.

I take a deep breath and do what I do best. I ruin what could have been. I slowly unbuckle my jeans and slide them down my legs before moving to my boxers next. My cock is hard as hell from wanting her, but the ugly scars stand prominent. She lowers her gaze and eyes my scarred thigh before looking back up at me.

“You think that would bother me?” she asks, keeping her head held high and her eyes on mine.
