“What if he comes back?”

“Then I’ll handle it.”

“By doing what? How are you going to make it stop?”

“First things first, you’re gonna go to the lawyer I tell you and file for divorce. This shit needs to end, Lyra. You have to take thefirst steps, yeah?” Slowly, she nods her head and agrees with me. That’s a start.

“He’s not a nice man.”

“Neither am I when you mess with somethin’ I want.”

“I have two kids,” she reminds me. I smirk at her.

“I know that, Lyra. Stop tryin’ to overthink this.”

“It’s just a lot to deal with.”

“I know it is, but we got this. We’re gonna handle this. Startin’ with the divorce.” She nods her head before I pull her into my arms. I know she’s worried about this. I know she’s worried about him showing up, and he may, but that’s where I come in.

“This is all so crazy,” she says softly as I keep her tucked into my chest.

“It’s only gonna get worse before it gets better. You know that, right?”

“I’m scared.”

“I know you are, but I’m here, Lyra. I’m not goin’ anywhere. I’m gonna be here no matter what.”

She thinks she’s doing this alone, and she isn’t. I understand the fear of the unknown, but I need her to understand me. I need her to realize I’m not going anywhere. I’m in this thing with her one hundred percent. For me, that’s a huge step. I never thought about having kids or being a stepdad. I never thought I’d find a woman like Lyra either, but here she is.

I shift so I can look down at her and force her to look up at me.

“We’re doin’ this,” I tell her.

“We’re doing this,” she repeats back to me. I smile a genuine smile before leaning down and pressing my lips to hers.

“He’s going to fight, Knight.”

“I’ll fight harder.”

“Why? Why are you doing this?” she asks softly. I reach up and brush a piece of hair away from her face before I smile at her.

“Maybe I see more between us. Maybe I can see myself in your future, Lyra. Don’t shut me out.”

“I’m not going to shut you out. Not anymore, but that’s a lot for you to take on,” she reminds me.

“I know it is, but I also know what I want.”

“What do you want?”

“You.”

Lyra

Italked to the lawyer Knight sent me to. He’s in the process of working out the details of the divorce. I’m thankful this part of my life will be over soon, but I’m also fearful. I know Dave is out there somewhere, and I know he’s not going to stop coming after me. I don’t like the idea of Knight being in the middle of all of this. I feel bad about that. He doesn’t seem to get it. He wants what he wants, and there’s no arguing with him.

“Stop lookin’ so upset.” I glance over at him, and he just smiles brightly at me.
