“Everything is gonna be okay now. She’s gonna heal up from this and be back home,” I tell them. They finally pull away from me when I hear someone behind us. Cage walks into the waiting room, a giant grin on his face.

“What the hell are you smilin’ for?”

“It’s a boy. I have a son,” he tells me. I walk over and pull him into a hug to congratulate him.

“Damn, brother. That’s good news,” I tell him.

“It is. Yenni is doin’ fine, too. She did good, brother.”

“I bet she did.” We pull apart, and I can’t help the smile that crosses my face. This day has gotten better and better.

“How’s your girl?”

“She’s good. She’s gonna be fine, though. Just needs some time to heal.”

“Good. I’m glad. You get everything handled?” he asks.

“Yeah, brother. It’s all good now.” He nods his head before slapping a hand on my shoulder and turning to go back down the hall.

Yeah, this day gets better and better.

Stitches and staples. Bruises and swelling. That’s what I kept hearing the doctor say over and over again. He stabbed me so deeply in some places I had to have staples. It was horrible. Something I will never forget, and right now, it’s proving to be too much.

I wake up startled and in pain. I grab the pillow and press it to my stomach the way the nurses showed me the hospital and sit up on the edge of the bed. A whimper leaves my lips, and then Knight’s awake.

“What are you doin’?”

“I had a bad dream, and I need my pills,” I tell him. He’s quickly out of bed and coming around to my side, grabbing the pill bottle off the side table. He shakes a few into his hand and then passes them to me, along with a bottle of water.

“Stop doin’ that shit, mama. I got you,” he says as I swallow the pills down.

“I can manage to get my pills, Knight.”

“You don’t have to, though. That’s the point. You need the rest and to stay layin’ down.”

“I’ve been in this bed for days. Besides, the doctor said I need to get up and move around,” I tell him.

“Not at two in the mornin’. Come on.” He adjusts my pillows and then helps me lay back down. I blow out a breath when I’m finally in position on my back.

“That okay?” he asks. I nod my head and watch as he walks away into the bathroom before coming back to bed. He climbs in so gently I want to laugh.

“You’re not going to break me, you know?”

“I don’t want to hurt you at all,” he replies softly.

“You’re not. You’re helping me, and I can’t thank you enough for that.”

“You need to talk about it?” he asks. I know I do. I want to. I want to tell him everything that happened, although some of it is just blank in my mind.

“We came home, and he was here. In this house,” I tell him as a chill runs down my spine. His hand comes over and grips mine, holding tightly.

“It’s okay, Lyra.”

“He … he grabbed me, and I told the boys to run. I’m so glad they did what I told them to.”
