Which makes me a tad more confused.

Why the hell would Britney do that? There was literally no point. She is averse to fame, and it was already a bit of a bother to even help me out by being my fake girlfriend.

And yet, she’d thrown herself into my arms.

I glance at her as she stares down at her feet, catching the defiant tilt of her chin.

There’s a sense of foreboding.

Something’s not right here.

“I need an answer,” David demands, literally trembling. “Alex, for God’s sake, answer me.”

I resist the urge to roll my eyes. No kiss, even a publicly broadcast one, is worth this amount of drama. I know that David prides himself on maintaining the chastity of his daughter, but this is more than a little melodramatic, even for him.

“Calm down, David,” Andy says. For once, he actually sounds in control of the situation. “Alex is not at fault here. Your daughter created the whole scene.”

David opens his mouth to say something, but just then, the door opens again.

This time, Blake steps in.

My chest constricts. Now, this is the part I’ve not been looking forward to.

“Dad,” he says, his gaze fixed on me. “I’m going to need to talk to Alex. Alone.”

“I need to talk to him first—” David starts to say.

“Trust me,” Blake insists, his gaze not leaving me. “I’ve got this.”

“Leave them to it,” Andy spits, his tone unusually grave. “We’ve got to nip this whole disaster in the bud, anyway.”

The two men walk out of the room, and I watch as Blake turns to his sister.

His gaze softens a little as he looks down at her. “I’m going to need you to leave us alone for a bit, Brit.”

She opens her mouth seemingly to protest, but she shuts it at the last instant.

A riot of emotions shoots up in my gut, increasing my foreboding.

Why do I get the feeling that only Britney knows exactly what’s happening here?

The moment the door shuts behind her, Blake rounds on me.

“I can’t believe you,” he says. His tone is measured, his eyes bloodshot. “I can’t fucking believe you’d take advantage of my baby sister.”

I clamp down on my irritation, trying to remind myself that all things considered, I should be impressed that Blake didn’t start this conversation with a punch.

“I didn’t make her kiss me,” I start. “I swear. Didn’t know she was going to do that.”

“Then why the fuck would she do it?” His voice is dangerously low. “I know her. She’s the shyest person I’ve ever met in my life. She didn’t even want to fake date you behind the scenes. There’s no fucking way she’d kiss you on live TV for no damn reason.”

I have to hold back a dry chuckle. It’s on the tip of my tongue to let Blake know he’s dead wrong. He doesn’t know Britney. Neither him nor his father do.

But even now, I’m compelled to hide her secret. At least, until I find out why the hell she kissed me.

“I didn’t tell her to come up there and make a spectacle,” I say. “Think about it. Why the hell would I ask her to do that? The plan was already a success. I was home free. Maybe she thought she had to do it, but I didn’t ask her to.”

Blake stares at me, his eyes getting redder.
