“Yeah, well, I don’t plan on missing for much longer, friend. If you haven’t noticed, I now have an entire militia to send after you. All of your people will soon fall at my feet when they see I’ve really held the power all along.”

He chuckles again, that bastard. “I think you mean Adrik has an entire militia. Oh, Rostya.”

He says my name like a disappointed parent, clicking his tongue.

“If only you could see, your worth will only ever equal that of a pawn. It is why I could never fully trust you, never let you in all the way like I so easily could with Damir.”

My jaw clenches as I take my pen and push it into the desk. He always loved Damir. So did his father, always putting them both on a pedestal while kicking me in the dirt.

“How did that work out for him in the end?” I taunt. “See, that’s your problem, Boris. You think that just because you hold a position of power, it makes you powerful enough to keep the ones youthinkyou love safe. Because of me, you now have no friends, no wife. Your son hates you, and I was even sure to kill that cute redhead in case she was getting too close. I took Eydis and pitted her against you. So I think if anyone has the worth of a pawn, it’s you.”

I feel rejuvenated, that is, until he responds completely unbothered.

“You took those things from me, yes. But look at what you have lost in return. You also have no son. In fact, your son has pledged his loyalty to me in favor of being your punching bag. You have no wife, and the only man who you could call a friend will likely stab you in the back the moment he has used you up. You are weak, and I am sure even a coward like Adrik can see it. I bet he has you sitting up in an office whilehetrainshistroops to fight.”

I slam my fist on the desk, only proving his point and making him laugh out loud.

“Poor Rostya, never could fight a battle for himself.”

“What do you want, Boris?” I bark as I grind my teeth together. “I have more important things to do than be belittled by a selfish mafia lord who needs to learn his place.”

He’s silent for a moment before a smug smile stretches my lips. Finally, I’ve made the big boss speechless.

“I just wanted to inform you that your little boy gang will have nothing on what we have coming for you. There was a moment where I actually felt bad for you not being able to see what’s coming. But now I know you’re the one who killed my wife, well…”

Fuck. Eydis wasn’t supposed to remember our little sessions.

“So, I’ll see you on the battlefield, old friend.”

He ends the call before I can get a word in.That prick.

I grab my new notebook and storm through the hall and into the underground bunker. The metal stairs clank loudly as I make my way down to the multiple fighting rings surrounded by workout equipment.

Adrik is with one of his men in the ring, taking him down in a swift move when he notices my approach. I try not to let Boris’ words get to me, but when Adrik jogs to my side with a question on his face, I nearly lose it. I am just as strong and capable as he is.

“So you can train, but I can’t?” I ask as he comes to a halt beside me.

“Never said you couldn’t, just didn’t know you wanted to. You seem more like a desk man.”

With force, I shove the notebook into Adrik’s hand. He is seething with anger when he steps back, and I have to carefully control my expression. I know I am the smartest man in the room, but he thinks he is. I let it slide because soon I won’t have any further use forhim, not the other way around.

“What’s this?” he asks, flipping through the pages.

“This is a detailed itinerary of everything Boris does on the anniversary of his wife’s death every year, including going to her grave located in an open, unobstructed field.”

Adrik looks at me and we silently share a moment of victory. Boris won’t see me coming this time, and I think it will truly bring the battle full circle. For him and his son to die on the same day as his wife did, fucking poetic.

“This only gives us a few days.”

“Don’t worry,” I say, shrugging off my jacket and climbing into the closest empty ring. “We will be ready.”

Chapter 38

I leave the room and head out of the estate after Evie tells us all just how fucked up my father really is. Walking along the road, the first snow starts to fall down around me. It should be beautiful, a day to celebrate and focus on the purity of the white flakes coming down to cleanse the earth, but for me, it’s just a reminder of who I came from.

A cold, heartless being.

I put my hands in my pockets as the wind picks up, and my almost shoulder length hair captures the flakes as they fall. The snow covers my face enough that eventually I don’t even seewhere I’m going. All I can do is put one foot in front of the other, unsure of where I’ll end up.
