“Lucky Charm, take a breath and see it from our perspective for just a second, okay?”

Her eyes soften when they meet mine. She can see this isn’t a battle won with yelling and attitude.

“I understand it’s private, I truly do. But what I am concerned about is you guys all being in one spot and making us easy targets in a graveyard.”

The way she tries to match Alexi’s tone to help him hear her words is quite impeccable.

“We cannot let our people see us weak. That is not the Bratva way.”

“Then maybe that way needs to change. You say you want to do things differently, Batman. Why not let your people see you are human and that you have hearts worth fighting for?”

“Our people do not care about our hearts. They care about our strength, influence, and the amount of money we can pay them.”

Evie shakes her head. “That’s not true. Not all of them.”

“This is not up for discussion, Princess. My answer is no.”

Evie looks at Damien and me, but we don’t say anything. It’s been so long that we’ve let Alexi control things. When he gets like this, he isn’t going to budge. She must realize this isn’t a fight she’s going to win so she backs off.

“Alright,” she says quietly.

Breaking out of my hold to stand, she makes her way to the steps and walks out of the tub. Gone is the cloud of peace. It is now replaced with an ominous feeling, one I really don’t like.

Alexi and Evie fight, that’s always been their thing. But why does it feel like we let her down somehow when she leaves the room?

Damien and I share a glance, and it’s enough to confirm he feels it too. Tree limbs knock into the window, the wind turning up a notch outside as the snow continues to fall in thick blanketing patches. I can’t help but think even mother nature is trying to warn us, letting us know something is coming.

Chapter 40

We get back to our home the next evening, and Evie still has yet to speak to me. In fact, she has hardly spoken to any of us. She heads straight to the pantry to grab a bottle of water, protein shake, and a banana. A tell-tale sign she is about to go and workout.

Maybe she just needs to sweat out her frustration because she knows my mind is not going to change. Our people will not see us as weak, even standing over a grave.

I get to my office by the kitchen and take a seat. Once I’ve got my computer turned on and have accessed the home screen, Itype in four different passcodes and pull up my email. Damien enters before I can open the first one.

“I think maybe Evie is right here, Lex. This could be a bad move on our part.”

I shake my head as I navigate through the three hundred messages in front of me.

“We will all be armed as usual. That will have to be enough. This is not up for discussion.”

Damien sits down in front of me, kicking his feet up on the desk.

“So that document about things being equal among family was total bullshit then?”

He crosses his arms, challenging me. “That document is not effective until we take over the Bratva. Since that has not happened yet, consider this my final reign.”

Damien snorts, and I give up looking at my computer. “Yeah, I didn’t think you had it in you to share anyways.” He stands up to leave.

“I share our wife just fine.”

Damien turns in the doorway, leaning on the frame to cross his arms again. The way he can act so casually about serious topics is something that drives me mad as much as it makes me envious.

“So, when it comes to the bedroom, you don't mind sharing the power, but as far as everything else goes, you're unwilling to compromise?”

“Not everything,” I say as I roll my eyes over his dramatics.

“Oh really? So you don’t choose all of our meals for us? You don’t import specific protein we use to workout with, and you don’t heavily suggest we have a routine? You don’t map out all of our days, and definitely don’t have house cleaning and food services all set to your routine without ever once asking us?”
