I type out a note on my phone. ‘Why now?’

My father reads it, then assesses me for a moment before answering. “Because I finally realized who the real villains were.”

Chapter 10

Giving Rostya the go-ahead to torture Eydis the way ‘he saw fit’ was a lot like trying to swallow a tennis ball. However, the results he’s achieved in only three weeks are quite remarkable.

Although, I’ll never tell him that. He’s very much the kind of man who needs to be kept in his place at all times. To give him any hint that I’m impressed would only boost the outrageous ego he’s got in his pocket.

The location I chose to keep her in has proven to be difficult to manage traveling to and from, but the fact that not one of theliteral thousand trip wires we have set around the facility has been triggered, I’d say it was a good choice.

Not only do they have no idea where she is, but this location is also impossible to get to unless you have the right equipment and resources. Not even Boris has those.

Which is the only reason I felt comfortable disabling the fail-safes that will blow the building if an unauthorized person tries to enter or leave. With Rostya and me being here, it wasn’t worth the risk.

Speaking of the bane of my existence, the fact that he didn’t die when an entire building fell on him makes me feel like he’s got some sort of ‘inability to die’ voodoo surrounding him.

It’s beyond frustrating. Rostya tried poisoning Boris for years, slipping small untraceable amounts of poison into his liquor any time he visited the estate. But the man just won’t die.

I resist the urge to punch the door open in anger. It’s cold as fuck outside here. The snow is really packing in, which makes me glad I called for extra supplies at the beginning of the week. We should get at least two more weeks here with her before we test her out in the field.

Rostya trained her responses to certain images which will trigger pain. And anytime she tries disobeying his order, he will flash a photo that will send her into a panicked state that only resolves if she passes out or uses a keyword. He also has trigger words to shut her mind off in case she starts to go rogue on a mission.

My original plan had been to break her spirit over and over until she felt she had nothing left to live for, then I would become her savior to step in and offer her life a new purpose. Similar to how I worked before, but this time was taking much longer because she knew starting out I was the bad guy. I have no doubt Havoc told her all of my secrets.

Speaking of the traitor, I pull up a message thread to send out a hit on him. There is a mercenary coalition I send jobs to when we have too many or if I need something not tied to us in any way, so this is perfect for them. If Rostya hadn’t been watching the estate and informed me of their plans that day, we would have walked right into a trap. The man I used to call my best friend betrayed me.For her.

I have no idea what makes this one girl so special to everyone, but I am determined to have it be the source of their downfall. We will keep training her until we can use her against them or until she dies. I’d hate for that outcome though. I’ve spent so much time and money on her it would feel like such a waste.

Getting to my feet, I decide to go see the progress Rostya has made today. He should just be finishing up with her, so I walk to his room where he keeps extensive notes on his methods. When I finally kill this man, I need to remember to find this book, so I can figure out how he did this. It will definitely come in handy.

I knock on his door, slipping on my nice guy facade.

“Adrik,” he says in greeting as he steps aside to let me in. “I think you’ll be pleased to hear about today.”

Another man is sitting in the corner. He’s broad shouldered and looks oddly familiar. I know he’s one of my men, but I can’t remember which.

“Cillian has been helping me with Eydis. He cleans up the mess after and makes sure she’s sedated between sessions.”

Cillian, that’s right. My Irish mafia wannabe. “Thanks for the help in this,” I tell him. He nods, staying seated as if his boss isn’t in the room.

“I think by next week she will be ready for a test run.”

I raise a brow. “A week ahead of schedule?”

Rostya grins, a truly revolting thing. “Let’s just say pairing electricity with the bed has been much more successful than I originally anticipated.”

Great. I’ll get to kill him even sooner than expected. This plan is turning out splendidly.

“I’ll just head out, sir,” Cillian says as he gets to his feet. He reaches out a hand for me and I shake it. When he closes the door behind him, I look at Rostya.

“Tell me about the progress then.”

Rostya moves to grab the notebook from his desk behind him, but it’s not there. His brows pinch as realization dawns on me. Alarms go off before we can move to the door.

They’re here.
