“Yes. You smell like rose herbal tea.”

She blinked. “That was my grandma’s favourite thing when I was growing up.”

“And if he was stupid and the woman he was interested in smelled like you, he would have fallen. What remains to be found out is why the third didn’t intervene?”

“Maybe he didn’t know, maybe he is dead, maybe he didn’t care, or maybe he is in pain. If any of your guys have manifested a heart attack or crushing pain in their chest and skull, that might be it.”

Ark nodded and muttered, “I am going to send a query to Achilles. He knows where all of us are.”

“That must be annoying.”

“There are only three hundred dark Elite right now and less than sixty of us out in the world. I have been out of the stronghold for ten years. I was one of the first dozen of our kind out of the stronghold. I left with Achilles, his mate, and their third. They took care of her, and she survived. We found places in the world outside the stronghold and prepared for the day our mates made themselves known. It was Miss Lestor who led me to Odette.”

Odette smiled. “More like aimed him at me in case he was feeling a little slow.”

Ark chuckled. “When Ruby told me who she was, I was here in six minutes. The ladies have more of an insight, plus they actually pay attention to the men and women around them.”

Mrytle smiled. “Not me. I go through my life with my head up my ass. My friends drag me away from work, and when we are done, they put me back where they found me, usually with dessert. It kills me that this is going to hurt them so much.”

Ark frowned. “You are giving up easily.”

She was outraged. “I have an elephant standing on my chest twenty-four seven. My nerves are on fire, and I am heading for week three of being dipped into hell. Every time I rest, I am not sure I am going to wake up. I have a new body I have never seen before, and it is fucking transparent! What about this is easy, you jackass?”

He stared at her, and then the world went grey and fuzzy. She saw a pale, pearly hand reaching for her, and she screamed, “No!” It was a second too late, and Odette crumpled.

Ark was holding Odette, and she was telling him that she was okay.

Myrtle looked at him and said softly, “I warned her that I am a walking black hole. I told her that she shouldn’t touch me.”

New voices said, “I think we can help a little.” An Elite omega with red eyes moved forward. Her long black dress swayed, and a braid wrapped around her locks.

Myrtle used the counter to claw herself upright. “Odette, how are you?”

“Weak but okay. It was the pain that knocked me on my ass.”

“Sorry. It must suck when it sneaks up on you.”

“You are living with that?”

“For as long as I last, yes.” She turned toward the woman with the red eyes. “Hello, my name is Myrtle.”

Ruby extended her hand, and Myrtle looked at it. “Oh, I am not going to touch you. Betas are fine, but other omegas have their energy sucked out.”

“Yes, but I have two alphas to draw on. Try it.”

Myrtle extended her hand, and the hard yank on Ruby’s energy was instant, but it didn’t knock them over. Myrtle pulled her hand back before she could take in too much.

Ruby swayed. “Oh, sweetie. That’s... agony.”

“Oh, thank god. I thought it was a tickle gone wrong.”

Ark held Odette up and said, “I suppose I forgot introductions. Ruby, Marshall, and Rayden, this is Myrtle. Myrtle, this is my business partner, a hockey player who picks locks, and their security specialist mate. Oh, and Ruby also wrote the Patchwork Pixie.”

Ruby smiled. “I did. I was eleven, but I did it. Now there is a council that wants to turn it into a teen angst movie.” She nodded. “Ark says you are a writer?”

“Yeah. I write light fantasy.”

“Could you turn the Patchwork Pixie into a novel?”
