“Not in Gatlington,” she whispered, disappointment hugging every word. “That’s too risky.”

“So is making out in the library,” I hissed, giving her a wry smile.

She pursed her lips, considering our options.

“We could go to a different town.”

I looked down at her and saw hope behind her eyes.

“A different town,” she continued, “where we’re not professor and student. We’d just be... Whitney and Rhys for a night.”

“Meet me in an hour at the book shop,” I said, tucking a rogue lock of hair behind her ear. “Bring an overnight bag.” I kissed her once more, taking my time, and then grabbed a random book and headed out of the stacks.

Chapter 21

Whitney

BILL STARED AT THE two of us, glancing from me to Rhys with a smug look on his handsome face. He sighed heavily, crossing his arms over his chest as his eyes dropped to my suitcase and Rhys’s overstuffed backpack.

“Ah, forbidden love. Tis a sweet—”

“Bill, the car.” Rhys gave Bill a cutting look, but the eclectic bookshop owner was enjoying himself too much to let Rhys off this easy.

Bill rolled his eyes to meet him, shrugging. “He doesn’t even have a car, babe. You sure about this guy?”

“He’s from England,” I choked out, trying not to laugh. “Why would he need a car for just a year—”

“Bill.” Rhys stepped forward, his hands planted on his hips. “I know what you want. You can have it, as long as you let me use your car for the next day or so.”

“Or so?” Bill smirked. “Running away together, then?”

“Bill—”

“Please, Bill?” I made myself look as pathetic as possible, batting my eyelashes at him.

Bill frowned at me. “Is that the best you got?”

Rhys pulled out his phone with a sigh. “I’ll give you Jessica Lowry’s number if you give me the keys, Bill.”

Bill immediately threw a set of keys at Rhys, which bounced off his chest and onto the ground.

“What? Jessica’s number?” I glanced between Bill and Rhys. “My Jessica?”

“She’s going to be my Jessica soon,” Bill murmured, turning away from us.

“Rhys,” I hissed, yanking the handle on my suitcase as I followed the two men to the very back of the store, where a door led out into the alleyway.

Rhys ignored me, picking up my suitcase and sliding it into the back seat of Bill’s ancient sedan. Bill looked smug as hell as he beamed down at his phone, his fingers moving rapidly.

“Rhys?” I got into the passenger seat and stared him down while he buckled his seatbelt and gave Bill a nod. “Why do you even have Jessica’s number?”

“I have access to the student directory,” he said simply, shrugging.

I huffed a breath and got my phone out of my purse while Rhys drove slowly down the alleyway and out onto the main street.

“Don’t say anything,” I said, a little miffed about what he’d just done. “I’m calling Jessica to warn her you gave Bill her number.”

Rhys arched a brow, the corner of his mouth twitching into a smile. I ignored him and dialed, wondering if this last-minute trip was already off to a bad start.
