I could feel the tremor in her body, the icy cold of dread seeping into her bones.

Without a word, I reached into my jacket, my fingers wrapping around the hilt of my Chi fighting blade.

It was a sinister piece of weaponry, its sharp edges glinting menacingly in the dim light of the room.

It fit perfectly into the palm of my hand, its weight a familiar comfort.

I prayed that I wouldn’t need to use it, but if it came down to it, I was prepared to fight.

I turned to Madison, keeping my voice low and steady. “Hide,” I instructed, nodding towards the bathroom.

She gave me a wide-eyed nod, slipping away silently.

As I approached the door, my senses heightened.

I could hear the low buzz of the inn below us, the dull murmur of the night’s patrons fading into white noise.

My hand on the door handle was cold, the metallic chill biting into my skin.

The scent of fear was strong in the air now, mixed with the musty smell of the room and the faint, sweet aroma of Madison’s perfume.

My body instinctively preparing for a possible confrontation.

Suddenly, the sound of their heavy pounding on the door jolted me from my thoughts.

The door vibrated under my hand, the metal creaking under the force of their blows.

A sense of grim resolve settled over me.

I was ready.

I moved back, positioning myself strategically by the door, my blade hidden from view.

The door creaked open, revealing the two Katars, their ugly smiles fading as they took in the sight of me.

The silence that followed was tense, charged with uncertainty and apprehension.

I could hear the faint whirring of the inn’s old fans, the low hum of the lights, and the quick, ragged breaths of the intruders.

“Who the hell are you?” one of them grunted, his eyes narrowing at me.

His companion merely stared, his gaze darting between me and the empty room behind me.

“I think you’ve got the wrong room, gentlemen,” I said, my tone calm but firm.

Their eyes flickered to my hidden hand, their suspicion growing.

I knew I had to end this standoff soon, one way or another.

Either they left peacefully, or I’d ensure they wouldn’t bother us again.

For Madison’s sake, I hoped it was the former.

But I was prepared for the latter.
